Principles of Effective Play Width in attack Depth in defence Delay in defence Tempo Mobility
7
These principles allow you to: Create space either for yourself or for your team Deny space to your opponents Play to your strengths Put pressure on your opponents Design a plan (tactic) that all can follow
8
Width in Attack Play to the side lines of the court trying to pull defenders out of the central areas so that space is created close to goals (usually for the point guards) to exploit Play the side channels (usually the forwards) to play quick passes to the guards. Left hand players to left/right hand players to right
9
Depth in defence Delay in defence Layers of defenders so that if one defender is passed then the next defender is there. One defender to go to the attacking player – force them wide – hold them up to allow own team to get back into position
10
Tempo The speed of attack –can catch your opponents out of position and get behind them. The element of surprise can make opponents make mistakes.
11
Mobility Mobility refers to keeping the ball by players moving and passing. On each decision the ball carrier should have more than one option. Defenders are being constantly moved out of position until a space is created that can be penetrated.

10 th December 2012 Go over homework. Nab’s - Final check Tempo and Mobility as it relates to our fast break Homework for Thursday 13 th December
13
Tempo In attack (offensive) first option would be a fast break. Quick injection of pace into the game would catch opposition out of position and chasing the game. If the fast break does not happen then the tempo is slowed down and the attack will be round the key waiting for a space to appear in the defence. Then the tempo will increase again using the space or in rebounding the shot.
14
Mobility If the first option for the fast break does not happen then another option will be used. The ability of the team to provide options whilst retaining possession of the ball. If the fast break is not on then the ball must be brought up the court safely without losing possession or the attacking team will be out of position giving the opposition space to get into the key and utilise the space.
