Is India a “superpower”? Learning Objectives: To understand the criteria for becoming a superpower and the implications that this status has; To investigate the arguments for / against India being considered as a superpower.

What does superpower mean? Superpower is “a state with a dominant position in the international system which has the ability to project dominant power and influence anywhere in the world”. "a superpower must be able to conduct a global strategy including the possibility of destroying the world; to command vast economic potential and influence; and to present a universal ideology".

Superpower Criteria... 1) A sizeable but manageable population 2)Is endowed with unity, political cohesion and stability. 3) Structured their national economic orders which are productive and competitive. 4) Trained manpower resources and high level of technological capacities. 5) High levels of defence or possession of nuclear and missile weapons 6) Is a democracy.
