3. INTRODUCTION Since 1 and 2 Kings are really one book, the problems and sources common to both are discussed in the Introduction to 1 Kings. Second Kings continues the story of the Hebrew monarchies. Chapter 1 – 17 describe the period from the reigns of Ahaziah of Israel and Johosephat of Judah until the fall of Samaria and the end of the kingdom of Israel in 721 B.C.

7. IN THE BEGINNING Saw that her son was dead, and set out to destroy all of the Royal Family.

9. THE PLOT Joash, King Joram’s son remained hidden for 6 years During the seventh year, Priest Jehoidia summoned the Captain's Carites and the Guards, had come to the house of the lord, under oath, and make a covenant.

10. THE PLOT CONTINUES After everyone agreed, Priest Jehoidia brought Joash out from hiding. Then, Jehoidia commanded them, “This is what you are supposed to do.” He order the Captains and the Guards who did not work on the Sabbath to separate into thirds and guard a certain section of the house of the Lord.

11. THE PLOT THICKENS On the Day of the Sabbath, everyone met in the house of the lord, Jehoida distributed spears and shields that were once used by King David to all of the Capitan's and Guard to protect Joash who would be appointed king with a proper ceremony.

12. TREASON! When Athaliah heard the noise of the guard and of the people, she went into the house of the Lord to the people. When she looked, there was the king standing by the pillar, according to custom. Athaliah tore her cloths and cried, TREASON! TREASON!

13. NOT IN THE HOUSE OF THE LORD The priest, Jehoiada commanded the captains to bring her between the ranks, and out the back of the Lord’s house. She went through the horses’ entrance to the king’s house, and there she was put to death.

14. THE COVENANT Jehoiada made a covenant between the Lord and the King and People, that they should be the lord’s people also between the king and the people.

18. A NEW REIGN The guards, and all of the people of the land, then brought the king down from the house of the lord, marching through the gate of the guards to the king’s house.
