5 I.Signs of Economic Trouble A. Farmers 1. Agricultural expansion during WWI led to a decline for farmers in the postwar era. B. Protectionism 1. Economic Nationalism- limiting trade to protect domestic industry. 2. High tariffs made it difficult for Europeans to sell goods in America, which then prevented Europeans from paying their debts. C. Speculation and Panic 1. The strength of the stock market in the 1920s led to an increase in market speculation. 2. The stock market crashed on Black Tuesday because people rushed to sell their stocks for inflated prices.

7 II. The Great Depression 1. The Great Depression was a direct result of the stock market crash. 2. France was able to hold off the effects of the Great Depression temporarily because it was less industrialized than other nations.

8 III. The New Deal 1. The United States was unable to help people because of a lack of social programs. 2. President Franklin D. Roosevelt instituted a plan of social programs called the New Deal. 3. The Social Security Act provided for unemployment and old-age benefits.

10 True Events from the U.S. in the 1930’s A group of 50 men were seen behind a Chicago restaurant, fighting over a garbage can. Some American’s emigrated to Russia to seek jobs. The suicide rate reached it’s peak. Jurors acquitted 2 families who shot their landlord to prevent from being evicted. Do you think any of these events could happen today? Why or Why not?
