NAWIC is a Business NAWIC is a corporation organized under the State of Texas laws for the purpose of: – Uniting for the mutual benefit women who are actively employed in the various phases of the Construction industry – To encourage cooperation and better understanding between them – To promote fellowship and goodwill among the members of the organization

Fiduciary Responsibility Chapter Board members act in trust as the responsible parties for the obligations of the chapter Chapter board members should always act in the best interest of the membership as a whole Review and approve budgets to fulfill NAWIC’s core purpose and chapter strategic plan which should support and help fulfill NAWIC’s national strategic plan

How to fulfill responsibilities Know how to perform your leadership role as an officer or member of the chapter board by reviewing the NAWIC Handbooks. Don’t Garble The Message!

Ask, Seek, Answer As Chapter Treasurer you are the custodian of the chapter funds Ask for documentation for expense reimbursement Seek out and follow best practices for transparency of chapter finances Be prepared to answer questions from fellow Board Members, Chapter Members and your NAWIC Director

As Chapter Treasurer You are member of the Budget Committee along with outgoing Treasurer and incoming President (outgoing President should give valuable input) Together prepare a realistic budget based on past experience and goals to accomplish Present budget to the Chapter Board of Directors for approval Communicate approved budget to the chapter membership

Money, Money, Money Money makes the world work! – Personally – Business – NAWIC chapters and on the national level As Chapter Treasurer part of your duty along with your entire chapter board is to understand the importance of making money for your chapter and overseeing how the chapter makes and spends money

NAWIC’s Tax Exempt Status Qualified by the IRS - IRC §501(c) (6) as a Business League exempt from paying federal income tax This status granted by the IRS has regulations that we must follow

Important Prepare monthly report for Board of Directors and Membership Bank statement and cancelled checks should be reviewed monthly by B.O.D. at Board meetings Pay bills timely Assist in filing Chapter IRS Compliance form to NAWIC office Assist in filing 990-N form to the IRS

View of the Future Simplify procedures if they are cumbersome and require too much time Don’t complain about the duties and responsibilities of Treasurer – no one will want to follow you! Mentor the next Treasurer – help her succeed Seek out leadership potential in new members – they are the future of your chapter & NAWIC
