Important Definitions Sexual Intercourse - when a man’s penis is placed inside a woman’s vagina Sexual Intercourse - when a man’s penis is placed inside a woman’s vagina Sexual Activity - any contact with genitals, buttocks, breasts for the purpose of sexual stimulation Sexual Activity - any contact with genitals, buttocks, breasts for the purpose of sexual stimulation Oral Sex - oral (mouth) contact with genitals Oral Sex - oral (mouth) contact with genitals Anal Sex - when a man’s penis is placed into the anus of another person Anal Sex - when a man’s penis is placed into the anus of another person Outercourse - genital-to-genital contact without the penis entering the vagina Outercourse - genital-to-genital contact without the penis entering the vagina

Sexually Transmitted Diseases l STDs are infections caused by viruses, bacteria, or protozoa that are spread by sexual activity. l A virus causes an infection that cannot be cured. Medicines can slow down viruses but cannot eliminate them. l Bacteria and protozoa cause infections but can usually be killed with antibiotics.

Chlamydia & Gonorrhea l Most infected don’t know it – can pass to others l In males – infects urethra, can cause pus, burning with urination l In females – infects cervix – could infect uterus, tubes, ovaries causing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)

SyphilisSyphilis l Starts as a painless sore on the genitals l If not treated, can spread and cause serious health problems l Can be transmitted to an unborn baby if the mother is infected l Treated with antibiotics

Genital Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) l It can cause painful blisters and sores on the genital area that reoccur. l Most people who get herpes do so from someone who has no sores or blisters. l Most people infected with herpes do not know it but can pass it during sexual activity. l NO CURE

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) l May lead to genital warts, abnormal cells on the cervix, and even cancer l Treated by freezing, burning, lasers, chemicals, and surgery l NO CURE

Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) The virus that causes

HIV vs AIDS l HIV Infection – the virus is in the body – may not know it because he/she feels fine – can pass to others during sex l AIDS – the virus has attacked the immune system – can become very sick (infection/cancer) – can die

How Can You Get HIV? l Heterosexual sexual activity (male/female) l Homosexual sexual activity l Illegal IV drug use l Mother transmits to unborn baby l Blood transfusion (rare today)

Hepatitis B and C Viruses (HBV & HCV) l Can cause liver damage that can lead to liver cancer and even death l Spread primarily through illegal IV drug use and high risk sexual activity l Millions in the U.S. are infected l Hepatitis B can be prevented with a vaccine

TrichomoniasisTrichomoniasis l Can cause a heavy discharge from the vagina l Usually no symptoms in males l Millions infected each year l Treated with antibiotics
