2 Herpes is a recurrent skin condition characterized by sores on the mouth or genitals. It is caused by the herpes simplex viruses called HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 most commonly causes "cold sores" on the mouth or face HSV-2 most commonly causes sores on the penis or vulva, the viruses are the same under a microscope and either type can infect the mouth or genitals.

3 Hepatitis B is a virus that causes chronic infection, scarring, and cancer of the liver. The virus is present in blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk. Hepatitis B is moved through unprotected anal, vaginal, and oral sex with an infected person; through contaminated needles or syringes; or from an infected mother breast feeding a baby Hepatitis B is the only STD for which a vaccine is available. Hepatitis B can not be spread through hugging, shaking hands, sharing food, drinking from the same glass, sitting on public toilets, or touching door knobs.

4 The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) makes an individual's immune system weaker and causes it to lose its ability to fight off infections and cancers. HIV-positive person is diagnosed with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). HIV is present in blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk. It is moved through the same things as hepatitis B such as unprotected anal, vaginal, and oral sex with an infected person. It is also not spread through the casual things as hepatitis B is also not spread through.

5 There are over 100 different versions of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). About 33% cause warts that infect the genital area. These warts can grow on the cervix, vagina, vulva, penis, scrotum, urethra, and anus. HPV can also cause other abnormal cells to grow on the cervix. Some versions of HPV can lead to cervical cancer. HPV is spread by direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected individual. Someone can also have it when warts are not present. It is sometimes transmitted from mother to child during childbirth.
