PaCTT Project Qualitative data analysis workshop
University of Zilina, Slovakia 24th July 2012
2
Key Principles Glaser & Strauss (1967) Inductive
Allows data to inform discover of theory multiple sources of data – inc individuals who do not share a common culture No reliance on extant theory Not intended to guarantee that two analysts working independently will achieve the same results Data collection, coding and analysis occur concurrently Research enters the field & discovers the main concerns of participants and the way they resolve these problems
3
GT processes Conventional approach GT approach Collect data
Analyse data Develop theories or hypothesis Read literature to explain findings Read literature Formulate Hypothesis Collect data Test hypothesis with data
4
Stages Identification of an area of interest
Theoretical sampling – data collection + memoing Constant comparison – concurrent process of coding and analysing 1st level coding - open coding – looking for patterns 2nd level coding – selective coding - Identification of core categories (most dense) 3rd level coding – theoretical coding Saturation – point at which data yields no new codes Theory building – basic social processes (represents a major process of the phenomena under study)
5
Constant comparison Data set n Data set n+ n Data collection
Note- taking Coding Memo-ing Data Collection Note-taking Coding Memo-ing Glaser 1967, 1978, 1992, 1998, 2001 cited in Jones et al 2005)
6
PaCTT project Data collection and memoing (Bulgaria interviews = n, Portugal = n + n2, Slovakia = n n2 + n3) Open Coding Selective coding More data collection (UK, Turkey, France – saturation?) Theoretical coding
