Sexually Transmitted Diseases

What are STDs? STD’s are diseases mainly transmitted through sexual contact, including intercourse and/or intimate contact with genitals, mouth, and/or rectum. Some STDs can be transmitted through blood and other body fluids. Different STDs are caused by different organisms so they require different testing procedures and treatment.

Common STDs Chlamydia Crabs Herpes Hepatitis B HIV/ AIDS Syphilis Gonorrhea Genital Warts

Chlamydia Transmission -vaginal or anal penetration from an infected partner -babies can get it from their mothers during birth as an eye infection Symptoms -incubation period of 2-6 weeks -pain when peeing -pusslike or clear discharge -itching or irritation -pain during intercourse Note: Up to 50% of males and 80% of females may not develop any symptoms

Chlamydia con’t Treatment –Chlamydia is curable with antibiotics If no treatment occurs: -arthritis -sterility -pelvic inflammatory disease in testicles and vagina, fallopian tubes and ovaries -urinary tract complications Prevention: abstinence or use a condom

Crabs/Pubic Lice Transmission -close physical contact -sharing unlaundered bedding, bathing suits, underwear Symptoms -no symptoms occur for 3 weeks -itchiness in pubic area or other hairy areas -blood on underwear caused by crab bites

Crabs/Pubic Lice con’t Treatment -special shampoo and thorough cleaning of living/sleeping areas, clothes, bedding, and towels -Crabs will frequently reoccur if treatment is not followed thoroughly

Herpes Approx 25% of all sexually active adults have herpes Transmission -skin, blisters, genitals, oral, anal -can be transmitted during pregnancy if an outbreak occurs during labor Symptoms -incubation period of 2- 21 days -many don’t notice any symptoms -pain in contact area -small blisters -swollen glands in groin -flu-like symptoms -when sores heal, virus retreats to nerve tissue -after sores heal, outbreaks may reoccur

Herpes con’t CAN’T be cured though medication can reduce symptoms and prevent reoccurrence Can spread even if no symptoms are present Prevention –Abstinence or use a condom

HIV/AIDS Human Immunodeficiency Virus/Acquired Immunodeficiency Virus Transmission –Sexual contact with an infected person –Exposure to infected blood (sharing needles) –Infected mother to unborn or breastfed baby Symptoms –May or may not occur –Flu-like symptoms –Weight loss, fatigue, fever, night sweats, diarrhea, memory loss, confusion and depression

HIV/AIDS con’t Treatment –There is no cure –Drugs are available to improve health and life expectancy Prevention –Don’t share needles or intentionally exchange blood with anyone –Abstinence or use condom

Gonorrhea Transmission -oral, vaginal, or anal penetration with an infected partner -pregnant woman to her baby during birth, causing eye infection Note: up to 20% of males and 80% of females will not notice any symptoms Symptoms -incubation period of 2-10 days -burning or itchy rectum -watery stool -bloody or pusslike discharge from rectum -mild sore throat -redness, swelling, or pussiness in eyes -puss discharge from penis -burning during peeing -no symptoms -yellowish vaginal discharge -lower abdominal pain

Gonorrhea con’t Treatment –It is curable, treated with antibiotics If no treatment occurs: -arthritis -sterility -infections in testicles and vagina -urinary tract complications -pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) Prevention Abstinence or use a condom

Genital Warts/ HPV Transmission -skin to skin contact in genital or anal area -sexual contact -from mothers to babies during birth (rare) Symptoms -often no symptoms for 1 –10 months after infection -warts are often painless but might itch -flesh colored growths that appear in genital and anal areas

Genital Warts/HPV con’t Treatment NO cure – though treatment is available through wart removal, creams, laser therapy and surgery -virus is still present even if warts disappear -warts may spread Warts may develop into form of genital cancer

What we’ve learned about STDs: They come in many shapes and forms They reside in warm, moist and dark areas Some are curable some are not STDs can be contracted by intercourse, oral, anal, and skin to skin contact Abstinence and condoms are the best way to protect yourself from STDs
