Infinitives A verbal that functions as a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. An infinitive usually begins with the word “to” DO NOT confuse infinitives with a prepositional phrase containing “to” A prepositional phrase ends with a noun or pronoun.

Infinitive as a Noun To leave now would be rude. (“to leave” is the subject of the sentence) No one wants to stay. (direct object of “wants”) Her goal is to win. (subject complement identifying the subject “goal”)

Infinitive as an Adjective She is the candidate to watch. (adjective modifying the noun candidate)

Infinitive as an Adverb We came to cheer. (adverb modifying the verb “came”) Is everybody ready to go? (adverb modifying the adjective “ready”)

Infinitive Phrases An infinitive phrase consists of an infinitive and all of the words related to the infinitive. Infinitives may have modifiers and complements
