3. Mission Definition Statement of Purpose and Business
Purpose Question: Why does the Rosebud County BBCC exist?
Business: What the BBCC does

4. Creating the Purpose Statement (1)
First, identify the focus problem the BBCC is trying to solve
Two basic elements:
Infinitive verb: indicates a change in status; for example: to increase; to decrease; to eliminate; to improve
Identify the problem to be addressed; for example: access to health care; infant mortality; teen pregnancy, etc.

5. Creating the Purpose Statement (2)
Summarize your business: “What business are you in?”
Purpose = ends statement
Business = summary statement about means
Example: Mission of organization ABC is “to improve the health of at risk youth” (purpose) by “offering direct medical services, counseling and health education to youth at Juvenile Hall.” (business)

6. Identify the Focus Problem
Exercise One:
Two to Three word phrases that define the problem. One example given in the workshop was the “growing number of children lacking life skills”
Exercise Two:
Determine infinitive verbs

7. Possible Mission Statements
1. Investing in children to lead rich lives
2. Investing in children and families to lead a rich life
3. Preparing children to lead rich lives
4. Building rich families
5. Helping to enrich lives
These possible statements are listed in rank order as determined in the workshop on 3/16/13

8. Business Statement
What business is the BBCC in that solves the focus problem(s)?
Exercise Three:
What means will achieve your purpose?
This exercise will need to take place in the second workshop

Can and should be inspirational
Focuses on how the world will be changed
