1 INDIGO WINE GROUP REYNEKE PRESENTATION

2 BACKGROUND BACKGROUND - In 1988, The Reyneke family bought the farm Uitzicht – a 35ha farm on the ridge of the Polkadraai Hills, with spectacular views of Stellenbosch. Contemporaneously, Johann Reyneke began the lengthy process of the conversion from conventional farming to organic practices to a method of farming which was in accordance with biodynamic principles. On 1 January 2007, Reyneke wines was certified by Debio (Norway) and IFOAM (Europe). Reyneke was the first farm in South Africa to achieve Demeter International certification: the largest, and arguably, the most widely acknowledged biodynamic accreditation body in the world. INSPIRATION - INSPIRATION - So what inspired this move towards biodynamic farming? A philosophy graduate, Reyneke’s Master’s thesis was on the environment and development; Reyneke’s academic background may well have catalyzed his predilection towards biodynamic farming, but it was his encounter, in 1991, with a 15-year old bottle of Nicolas Joly’s biodynamic Loire Chenin Blanc, Colée de Serrant, while in Copenhagen, which signified his watershed moment.

4 DEFINING BIODYNAMIC FARMING DEFINING BIODYNAMIC FARMING – Biodynamic farming is an ecological, self-supporting farming system (rather than an industrial or chemical approach to the production of agricultural produce). Grapes are grown with no herbicides, no fungicides and no pesticides. It has no adverse environmental effects and promotes soil enrichment, conservation and construction. Soil is viewed as a complex and living entity and is considered the prime capital and wealth of the farmer. JOHAN REYNEKE- JOHAN REYNEKE- Johan has essentially become South Africa’s biodynamic expert in the field of viticulture. His knowledge and passion about biodynamic farming is immediately evident and he is happy to share this with anyone who is looking for advice. Biodynamic farming is a way of life for Johan, his wife Mila and their two daughters Tallulah and Josephine. He firmly believes that “Farmers are stewards of the land, and depending on our custodianship and the degree to which we honour the land, we will reap the dividends”.

5 KEY DIFFERENCES BETWEEN ORGANIC AND BIODYNAMIC: Use of imported materials: Organic permits imported (materials brought in from outside the farm) organic fertilizers and pesticides Biodynamic reduces imported materials by addressing its needs from within the farming system Fertility delivered via a nutrient rich soil component, called humus, created by the: Integration of livestock Intensive use of green manure (cover crops grown to add nutrients to soil) and legumes Rotation of crops Application of field/compost sprays (the biodynamic preparations) Pest and Disease Control: Creation of biologically diverse habitat encourages balanced predator prey relationships Humus development contributes to insect and disease resistance Water: Increased humus levels result in soil’s ability to store water Preservation of natural areas emphasized Biodiversity requirements No specific requirement for Organic farming Biodynamic requires a biodiversity set- aside of ten percent of the total farm acreage Farm certification Organic is crop focused and allows for a designated parcel of land to be certified Biodynamic is farm focused and requires that the whole farm be certified
