Preparing required application documents There are three main ways to apply for a job or work experience Answers: Curriculum Vitae (CV) Application form Letter of application
3
CV Word processed on a single side of A4 Could be extended as you gain more experience No strict rules about layout but........ Must be neat – logical – look pleasing and distinctive Easy for the employer to find information regarding you Subheadings in bold
4
CV Content Name Address Date of birth Phone numbers including mobiles Email address Personal statement – including skills – qualities – ambitions – relate to this particular job you are applying for Employment record – most recent first – dates – summary of your duties Education to date – most recent first with dates including short courses e.g. CSLA – OCNs – First Aid etc Other achievements – hobbies and interests e.g. Rock climbing – squash Referees (check that they will write you a reference)
5
CV Content Leave out information that is irrelevant or reflects badly on you This is your CV – so no definitive rules about content – but make sure it is true Your CV is a reflection of you – how it is presented will show employers many things about you Make sure spelling and grammar are accurate
6
Your CV… What skills do YOU have? Write down as many skills as you can and how/why you gained them. Feel free to chat with your peers about what you came up with…..they may recognise that they have those skills too!!!
7
CV and Personal statement handout Sample CV? Draft CV- A4 Produce a CV
8
Your Letter of Application Sets out all the information found on a CV but in letter style Some employers ask for this method of application to see if a candidate is committed enough to write a letter and can construct a letter correctly Normally word processed – some will ask for handwritten – Why ?? When you send your CV and / or application form you need to send a short ‘covering letter’ The letter needs to be accurate and well presented and set out in business style (no text or email speak)
9
Application Form What is an application form ? A set form you may be asked to complete for work experience or a permanent job You must answer all the questions fully and accurately Application forms are the most common way of applying for a job All candidates complete the same form
10
Completing an Application Form Write with a black pen Check to see if they ask for BLOCK CAPITALS Write legibly or type or word process if you have it electronically Read the question carefully first before answering the question Have a personal statement prepared that you can adapt to the job you are applying for (most jobs will ask for one with a CV) Use the job description or person specification as a guide to what you should include in the statement Sell yourself but do not waffle Identify key statements from the advertisement, job description or person specification and talk about them on your form (you will be shortlisted based on these) If you make a mistake cross it out neatly and carry on Do not lie – you are signing it as a true and accurate reflection of you Try not to leave it until the last minute and post in plenty of time or by hand
11
Activity Complete an application form They will be looked at and paper sifted Paper sifting means that mistakes will be noticed and added up and your application ‘binned’
