Science, research and developmentEuropean Commission Chile-EC S&T Agreement Brussels, 24 September 2002 Framework Programme 6 (2002-2006) Thematic priorities Focus on strategic areas where immediate and longer term integration of European research is needed to generate and sustain necessary critical mass New knowledge >> understanding >>application

Science, research and developmentEuropean Commission Chile-EC S&T Agreement Brussels, 24 September 2002 Priority ‘Life Sciences, Genomics and Biotechnology for Health’ To help Europe to exploit breakthroughs in decoding the genomes of living organisms for the benefit of : - public health - citizens - increase the competitiveness of European biotechnology industry

Science, research and developmentEuropean Commission Chile-EC S&T Agreement Brussels, 24 September 2002 Priority 1: Life Sciences, Genomics and Biotechnology for Health Advanced genomics and its application for health (1100 Millions Euros): Fundamental knowledge and basic tools for functional genomics in all organisms Applications of knowledge and technologies in the field of genomics and biotechnology for health Combating major diseases (1155 Millions Euros): Application-oriented genomic approaches to medical knowledge and technologies Confronting the major communicable diseases linked to poverty

Science, research and developmentEuropean Commission Chile-EC S&T Agreement Brussels, 24 September 2002 Fundamental knowledge and basic tools for functional genomics in all organisms Objective: Understanding of genomic information, by developing the knowledge base, tools and resources needed to decipher the function of genes and gene products. - Research actions: gene expression and proteomics - Structural genomics - Comparative genomics - Comparative genomics and population genetics - Bioinformatics - Multidisciplinary functional genomics approaches to basic biological process APPLICATIONS MedicineAgricultureQuality of LifeEnvironment

Science, research and developmentEuropean Commission Chile-EC S&T Agreement Brussels, 24 September 2002 Applications of knowledge and technologies in the field of genomics and biotechnology for health (i) Objective: Foster the competitiveness of Europe’s biotechnology industry by exploiting the wealth of biological data produced by genomics and advances in biotechnology. - Research actions: Technological platforms for the development in the fields of new diagnostics, prevention and therapeutic tools … with an active and early involvement of regulators, experts on ethics, patients and society at large. APPLICATIONS Health Care DiagnosticsCost Reduction Individualised treatment New drugs and therapies

Science, research and developmentEuropean Commission Chile-EC S&T Agreement Brussels, 24 September 2002  Technological platforms for developments in the field of new diagnostic, prevention and therapeutic tools : Applications of knowledge and technologies in the field of genomics and biotechnology for health (ii) Rational and accelerated development of new, safer, more effective drugs including pharmacogenomics approaches Development of new diagnostics Development of new in vitro tests to replace animal testing Development and testing of new preventive and therapeutic tools (such as somatic gene and cell therapies [stem cells therapies]) Immunotherapies Innovative research in post-genomics, which has high potential for application

Science, research and developmentEuropean Commission Chile-EC S&T Agreement Brussels, 24 September 2002 Application-oriented genomic approaches to medical knowledge and technologies Objective: to develop improved strategies for the prevention and management of human disease and for living and ageing healthy. Research actions: - Combating cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and rare diseases - Combating resistance to antibiotics and other drugs - Studying the brain and combating diseases of the nervous system - Studying human development and the ageing process - Combating cancer APPLICATIONS Bringing basic knowledge through to clinical applications Improved patient- oriented strategies

Science, research and developmentEuropean Commission Chile-EC S&T Agreement Brussels, 24 September 2002 Confronting the major communicable diseases linked to poverty Objective: To confront the global emergency caused by the three major communicable diseases HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis through the development of effective disease interventions, particularly for use in developing countries.
