Nuclear Unit
2
Unit: Nuclear Monday, April 2, 2012 Objective: SWBAT determine if statements about nuclear energy are true or false. BR- What is nuclear energy? Where do you think it comes from? LESSON- 1.Nuclear Survey 2.Use computers to look up answers 3.Present out HW- none
3
Unit: Nuclear Energy Tuesday, April 2, 2012 Objective: SWBAT describe the 4 types of nuclear decay and write a chemical equation to represent each. BR- What do you think makes nuclear waste dangerous? LESSON- 1.Notes on Intro to Nuclear Energy (alpha, beta, gamma, neutron decay) 2.Problems in the book (in notes) HW- – finish problems – begin vocab
4
Unit: Nuclear Energy Wednesday, April 4, 2012 Objective: SWBAT write chemical equations for nuclear decay. BR- Which type of radiation will travel the farthest and requires the most to stop it? Which requires the least? LESSON- 1.Go over blue packet, prep for quiz!

Unit: Nuclear Energy Thursday, April 5, 2012 Objective: SWBAT write the chemical equations for nuclear decay. BR- 1.Write the reaction for the beta decay of Co-60. 2.Write the reaction for the alpha decay of Th-232. 3.Write the reaction for the gamma decay of Bi-209. LESSON- 1.QUIZ on writing decay reactions 2.After the quiz- read pp 289-292. 3.Try to do “Practice” Half Life problems 1-5 on page 292 HW- none

Unit: Nuclear Tuesday, April 10, 2012 Objectives: SWBAT calculate how much of a sample will remain after a certain number of half lives. SWBAT calculate how many half lives have passed given a sample amount. BR- What are the 4 kinds of nuclear decay we have discussed? Give the symbol for each. LESSON- 1.Notes on decay rates 2.Math Skills packet 1.Do 1, 4, 7 on board, then work in groups on the rest 3.Half Life Problems 1-5 on page 292 (“Practice” at top of page) HW- finish problems

Unit: Nuclear Energy Thursday, April 12, 2012 Objective: SWBAT solve half life problems for: Half-life (time), number of half-lives or how old a sample is given the other two variables. BR- 1.If a sample is still 25% parent nuclide, how many half lives has it experienced? 2.If the half life for this sample is 15 minutes, how old is it? LESSON- 1.Half Life Problems to get ready for quiz tomorrow. 2.Begin Reading Guide HW- none
10
Unit: Nuclear Energy Friday, April 13, 2012 Objective: same as yesterday BR- How many half lives have passed if 31/32’s of a sample has decayed? LESSON- 1.HALF LIFE QUIZ 2.Complete reading guide pp 293-297 3.If time: Intro to nuclear reactions 1.Notes while going over the reading guide? HW- none
