2. Top 10 Safety Rules  Always wear safety glasses. A MUST when away from your desk/table.  Always work in a well ventilated area. Carbon Monoxide will make you sleep forever!!  Gasoline is extremely flammable. Never use as a cleaner, e.g., to clean parts or paint brushes.  Only work under a vehicle that is safely supported; use jack-stands.

3. Top 10 Safety Rules - continued  No jewelry, necklaces, or wristwatches. May become caught in moving parts or short-out against a battery.  Proper clothing should worn while working in the shop area--consider work boots, and shop coat (denim/cotton preferred).  Radiators (cooling system) are under pressure when hot!! Never open while hot!!

4. Top 10 Safety Rules - continued  Batteries are very explosive while being charged; acid will cause chemical burns, both to person, and clothing.  Compressed air (blow guns) can penetrate skin--only to be used for blowing off parts!!  A clean work area is a safe work area. Clean- up spills, put tools away.

5. Eye Protection  Glasses to be worn at all times.  Goggles to be worn over-top of prescription glasses--protect lens.  Avoid welders’ flash--very painful, just like a sunburn. Wear proper welding eye protection;  face shield/dark lens for arc & mig welding  dark green goggles/glasses for torch operations

6. Carbon Monoxide (CO)  Invisible  non-irritating  tasteless  odourless  produced by the burning of fuel--combustion process  absorbed through bloodstream, affects brain quickly  initially causes headaches, and/or fatigue (sleepiness)  First Aid -- fresh air, and seek medical attention (call 911)

7. Gasoline  Easily ignited--static, furnace pilot-lights  dry chemical extinguisher is best suited to “put-out” fires--sweeping action recommended to “smother” fire--NEVER water. Sand can be used if no extinguisher is available.  Will cause skin irritation, e.g., wash hands and/or change clothes.

8. Support of Vehicles  Use hydraulic jacks (not bumper jacks); floor jack (with wheels) are recommended.  Use safety stands--NOT cement blocks  Have instructor check hoist and vehicle before raising a vehicle (car, pick-up).

9. Batteries  explosive--hydrogen gas--produced while battery is being charged. No sparks or flame near a battery (no smoking).  Sulphuric acid can cause burns--wash skin immediately.  Flush eyes for no less than 15 minutes-- seek medical attention--never take a “chance” with your eyes!!

10. Compressed Air  Very powerful, safe way of operating many tools and equipment for repair of vehicles.  Air pressure may range from 90 to 120 psi.--enough to push dirt into skin, or puncture skin (air bubbles in bloodstream can be painful or fatal).  Use only as intended--very safe.

11. Spills  Clean-up all spills immediately!!  Use oil-dry (looks like kitty liter) or Wood chips on oil & gas spills--use sparingly  spread oil-dry as if you are “feeding chickens”

12. Safety starts with YOU.  Wear your safety glasses during practical activities!! Get used to IT.  No fooling around!! This includes running as falling will hurt, and may cause blood loss. Common Sense--you’ve got it… use it!
