A Conversation Across the Disciplines to Integrate Literacy into Middle & Secondary Classrooms Drs. Pixita del Hill Prado, Ellen Friedland, & Jevon Hunter Elementary Education & Reading Department

Today’s Charge We are seeking to collaborate across disciplines to initiate and continue conversations about content- specific literacy, the Common Core Learning Standards (CCLS), and their impact on the development of our pre-service teachers.

Definitions of Literacy In groups of three or four, please share your definition of literacy as it relates to your discipline and describe how you have your pre-service teachers illustrate this definition of literacy in their lessons.

Student Learning Outcomes 1) Develop an awareness of the importance of literacy skills and strategies that facilitate their students’ learning of content area material. Exhibit a working knowledge of a variety of literacy strategies that promote comprehension, vocabulary development, writing, and study skills that can be incorporated into content area instruction. Recognize specific reading problems students encounter related to each content area, such as specialized vocabulary, difficult concepts, graphic materials and symbols. Exhibit a working knowledge of strategies to develop students’ higher order thinking skills such as making inferences, forming evaluations and making critical analyses. Apply their knowledge to design lessons that incorporate a variety of literacy strategies into content area instruction. Demonstrate how to use a wide variety of materials such as trade books, newspapers, magazines, web resources, and other forms of media in the content areas. Recognize the wide variety of interests, backgrounds, and abilities of adolescents and know how to group and adjust assignments for optimal instruction. 8) Develop strategies that promote responsibility, motivation, and an appreciation for diversity. 9) Apply informal assessment techniques. 10) Apply culturally and socially responsive practices in the instruction and assessment of all students. 11) Exhibit a working knowledge of the Common Core Learning Standards and NYS Learning Standards.

College & Career Ready: Integrating Literacy into the Content Areas How is literacy already present in the preparation of pre-service teachers at the middle & secondary levels? What central points from A. Botticelli’s keynote address will influence the preparation of pre-service teachers for middle and secondary teaching?

An EDU 416 Example: Reading Standards in History/ Social Studies (RH) Grades 6-8Grades 9-10Grades 11-12 Describe how a text presents information (e.g., sequentially, comparatively, causally). Analyze how a text uses structure to emphasize key points or advance an explanation or analysis. Analyze in detail how a complex primary source is structured, including how key sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text contribute to the whole. Craft and Structure #5

An EDU 416 Example: Reading Standards in Science & Technical Subjects (RST) Grades 6-8Grades 9-10Grades 11-12 Analyze the structure an author uses to organize a text, including how the major sections contribute to the whole and to an understanding of the topic. Analyze the structure of the relationships among concepts in a text, including relationships among key terms (e.g., force, friction, reaction force, energy). Analyze how the text structures information or ideas into categories or hierarchies, demonstrating understanding of the information or ideas. Craft and Structure #5
