New Advanced Higher Subject Implementation Events Design and Manufacture: Advanced Higher Course Assessment

Course Assessment at Advanced Higher  Course Assessment at AH assesses Added Value  Course at AH is graded A – D, as at present  Controlled Assessment of setting, conducting and marking  For AH Graphic Communication there are 2 Components: –a Project (60%) –a Question paper (40%)  No dual running at Advanced Higher in session 2015-16

AH Design and Manufacture – Question Paper 80 marks (40% of award) 2 hours sampling across all course content application of knowledge and understanding drawing from Product Evolution, Product Evaluation and Product Development contexts

AH Design and Manufacture – Question Paper Two sections section 1: 30 marks – focus on Product Evolution section 2: 50 marks – integrated questions covering the other unit contexts

Workshop 2: question paper Using the materials provided, in small groups of 2- 3, discuss:  Identify subject-specific topics for discussion Using the materials provided, in small groups, discuss:  how questions relate to, and integrate aspects of the mandatory content for the Course (CAS)  how question approaches progress from Higher  the depth of answers required as indicated in Marking Instructions  consider Section 1, Question 1a – discuss the model responses and place them in the appropriate ranges within the Marking Instructions  existing materials which can still be used to support learning and teaching – any new materials required

AH Design and Manufacture - Project What it does: Assesses the practical application of skills and knowledge from across the Course 120 marks (60% of award) Documents needed: GAI (general assessment information) Project Assessment Task, with candidate guide The project will be: Carried out under supervised conditions Internally marked (subject to verification)

AH Graphic Communication - Project Area of project Marks available Defining a design opportunity – analysis and research10 Project planning10 Generating and developing ideas towards a design proposal30 Applying graphic techniques to inform and communicate design decisions 10 Applying modelling techniques to inform and communicate design decisions 10 Analysing and evaluating to inform design decisions15 Applying knowledge and understanding of materials and processes 15 Applying knowledge and understanding of design issues20

Proposal and outline Defining a design opportunity - analysis and research Discussion, feedback and approval Project planning Design proposal Generating and developing idea towards a design proposal Applying graphic techniques to inform and communicate design decisions Applying modelling techniques to inform and communicate design decisions Analysing and evaluating to inform design decisions Applying K&U of materials and processes Applying K&U of design issues

AH Design and Manufacture - Project GAI (general assessment information) overview suggested design contexts assessment conditions giving support and guidance evidence to be gathered marking instructions

AH Design and Manufacture - Project Project Assessment Task overview marking instructions (same as GAI) assessment record Appendix 1: instructions and guidance for candidates

AH Design and Manufacture - Project Project Assessment Task: Appendix 1 guidance on recording progress stage-by-stage advice and guidance assessment requirements for each aspect additional guidance on research ethics list of possible project contexts

AH Design and Manufacture - Project Initial stages (PAT pp.30-42) overview of project guidance on recording progress guidance on choosing a suitable problem project proposal and outline plan analysis of a graphic brief and initial research producing a graphic specification project planning

AH Design and Manufacture Choosing a suitable project

AH Design and Manufacture Project - getting started Producing a project proposal and an outline of how time might be allocated Getting assessor approval This establishes that the candidate’s proposal for their project is appropriate and feasible

AH Design and Manufacture Project Workshop activities – reference documents

Workshop 3a: project initial stages Using the materials provided, in small groups of 2- 3, discuss:  Identify subject-specific topics for discussion Using the Project Assessment Task and the GAI provided, in small groups, discuss:  the list of possible contexts – can you provide any others?  the ‘project proposal’ stage (Project Assessment Task doc.)  the requirements of evidence for: –‘Defining a design opportunity – analysis and research’ –‘Project planning’  how much advice and guidance is acceptable (GAI p5)  what kind of reflective comments could be recorded

Workshop 3b: Generating and developing ideas towards a design proposal ‘Generating and exploring ideas’ ‘Refining ideas towards a design proposal’ Using the materials provided, in small groups of 2- 3, discuss:  Identify subject-specific topics for discussion Using the materials provided, in small groups, discuss:  what evidence is required for each element – what would this look like?  how much advice and guidance is acceptable (GAI p5)  the marks awarded for these different elements  what kind of reflective comments could be recorded

Workshop 3c: ‘Applying graphic techniques (to inform and communicate design decisions)’ ‘Applying modelling techniques (to inform and communicate design decisions)’ ‘Analysing and evaluating (to inform design decisions)’ Using the materials provided, in small groups, discuss:  what evidence is required for each element – what would this look like?  how much advice and guidance is acceptable (GAI p5)  the marks awarded for these different elements  what kind of reflective comments could be recorded

Workshop 3d: Application of knowledge and understanding of materials and manufacturing processes Application of knowledge and understanding of design issues Using the materials provided, in small groups of 2- 3, discuss:  Identify subject-specific topics for discussion Using the materials provided, in small groups, discuss:  what evidence is required for each element – what would this look like?  how much advice and guidance is acceptable (GAI p5)  the marks awarded for these different elements  what kind of reflective comments could be recorded
