4 The Monsoons Monsoons are heavy rains During the summer months – winds blow from the south and southwest that carry moisture that cause heavy rainfall on the west coast. During the winter months, cooler winds blow from the north and northeast that dump heavy rainfall on the east coast. Indian farmers depend of the monsoons for their crops. Too little rain, too much rain, too early or too late, can ruin their crop.

5 Early Indian Cities Harappa and Mohenjo Daro were two early cities discovered (out of more than a thousand) that showed evidence of advanced civilization. These carefully planned cities had: Broad main streets with intersecting smaller roads Walled neighborhoods, with rows of houses Public water wells provided water for citizens Bathrooms with advanced sewer systems Garbage chutes removed waste away from houses

6 Rulers and the Economy Rulers Indus or Harappan (name given to Indian civilization) rulers based their power on a belief in divine assistance (religion and supreme beings). Royal palace and holy temple were the same. Economy Based on farming Indus River floods yearly to provide rich soil Grow wheat, barley, and peas. Trade was also conducted, as far away as Mesopotamia Indians traded copper, lumber, precious stones for food and textiles
