3 RAPPEL MASTER DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITES AND SAFETY REQUIRMENTS

4 RAPPEL MASTER QUALIFICATONS MUST BE A NCO (CPL OR ABOVE) OR WARRANT OFFICER OR COMMISSIONED OFFICER AND A GRADUATE OF A RECOGNIZED RAPPEL MASTER COURSE

5 RAPPEL MASTER CURRENCY MUST PERFORM RAPPEL MASTER DUTIES AT LEAST ONCE EVERY 6 MONTHS IF RAPPEL MASTER FAILS TO PERFORM DUTIES WITHIN 6 MONTHS, MUST ATTEND REFRESHER TRAINING

6 RAPPEL MASTER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY IS SAFETY RESPONSIBLE FOR EVERYTHING- SUCH AS: INSPECTION OF ALL EQUIPMENT INSPECTION OF AIRCRAFT, TOWER, OR ANCHOR POINT RIGGING AIRCREW AND SAFETY BREIFINGS TRAINING OF ALL RAPPELLERS, LANE NCOs, BELAYMEN, & BELAY CONTROLLERS

7 PERSONNEL NEEDED FOR TOWER & GROUND RAPPEL OIC OR NCOIC / SAFETY OFFICER- MUST BE SFC OR ABOVE & RANGER OR AASLT QAULIFIED RAPPEL MASTER- ONE ON SITE RAPPEL LANE NCO- MUST BE CPL OR ABOVE AND RANGER OR AASLT QAULIFIED BELAY PERSONNEL (One per rope on tower) BELAY CONTROLLERS- RANGER OR AASLT QAULIFIED (One per 4 ropes on the tower) MEDIC OR CLS WITH VEHICLE

11 RAPPELLER QUALIFICATIONS INITIAL TRAINING (CONT) IN ORDER TO CONDUCT A TACTICAL RAPPEL THE RAPPELER MUST CONDUCT THREE RAPPELS FROM AN AIRCRAFT (TWO OF WHICH MUST BE WITH COMBAT EQUIPMENT)

12 RAPPELLER QUALIFICATIONS SUSTAINMENT TRAINING CONDUCTED PRIOR TO RAPPELLING FROM AIRCRAFT REVIEW TYING OF RAPPEL SEAT & HOOK UPS CONDUCT AT LEAST FOUR RAPPELS FROM A 34FT TOWER TWO ON OPEN SIDE (ONE WITH COMBAT EQUIPMENT) TWO LOCK-IN RAPPELS (ONE WITH COMBAT EQUIPMENT)

13 RAPPELLER QUALIFICATIONS REFRESHER TRAINING CONDUCTED WHEN AIRCRAFT RAPPEL HAS NOT BEEN CONDUCTED IN 6 MONTHS REVIEW TYING OF RAPPEL SEAT & HOOK UPS CONDUCT AT LEAST THREE RAPPELS FROM A 34FT TOWER OPEN SIDE ONE HOLLYWOOD ONE WITH COMBAT EQUIPMENT ONE LOCK-IN RAPPEL

14 SAFETY REQUIRMENTS SAFETY IS THE FIRST CONSIDERATION SAFETY LINE OR SAFETY HARNESS FM COMMUNICATIONS (Mandatory for Tactical and Non-Tactical A/C Rappelling operations) TOWER RAPPELS: 10 ft OF ROPE ON THE GROUND AIRCRAFT RAPPELS: 20 ft OF ROPE ON THE GROUND

15 SAFETY REQUIRMENTS SLEEVES DOWN EYE & HEARING PROTECTION ID TAGS & ID CARD HELMET (chinstrap fastened) GLOVES W/ FRICTION BEARING SURFACE (with inserts as required) WEAPONS SLUNG ACROSS BACK, MUZZLE DOWN ON GUIDE HAND SIDE SECURE LOOSE CLOTHING, STRAPS & EQUIPMENT RAPPELLING UNIFORM

16 WARNING Service members will NOT wear a MILES harness during any rotary wing rappelling operations

17 SAFETY REQUIRMENTS NIGHT OPERATIONS- 1 CHEMLIGHT ATTACHED TO: ATTACHMENT POINT OF THE ROPE THE END OF THE ROPE THE RAPPELLER NO NVGs WORN BY RAPPELLERS RM MAY WEAR NVGs

18 ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS LIGHTNING WITHIN ONE NAUTICAL MILE WINDS EXCEEDING 30 KNOTS (TO INCLUDE GUSTS) AMBIENT TEMPERATURE 30 F DEGREES OR BELOW WIND CHILL FACTORS WHICH COULD CAUSE COLD WEATHER INJURY (rotor wash, wind during flight) THE FOLLOWING WILL CANCEL RAPPELLING OPERATIONS:

19 ENVIRONMENTAL CONSIDERATIONS RAIN, SNOW, ICE ON THE ROPE INHIBITING THE ABILITY TO CONTROL DESCENT BROWN OUT WHICH CAUSES LOSS OF VISUAL CONTACT WITH GROUND ROPE EXPOSED TO ELEMENTS LONG ENOUGH TO FREEZE, THEREBY REDUCING ITS TENSILE STRENGTH THE FOLLOWING WILL CANCEL RAPPELLING OPERATIONS:

20 EMERGENCIES ROPES OR RAPPELLERS BECOME ENTANGLED AIRCRAFT ENGINE FAILURE POSSUM RAPPELLERS (Must check rappelers snap link) INVERTED OR OPEN SNAPLINK ( Must lower safety line to rappeller) FALLING RAPPELER CUT ROPES (Rappel Master is only person authorized to cut ropes)
