Wednesday, Apr. 8 th p. 236, 237

Wednesday, Apr. 8 th 236 4/8/15 Wed. L.T.: I can understand how humans have impacted the ecosystem at Mono Lake. DO NOW: What kinds of abiotic factors are resources for both humans and other organisms? What examples can you think of when humans have taken more than their “fair share” of these resources? Try to name 3. …………………………………… Reflection: 237 Title: Human Impact at Mono Lake What Humans DidImpact on M.L. ecosystem P#Main ideaDetails 1234512345

5 th period DO NOW Abiotic ResourceHow humans have taken more than they should 1.land/space 2.Fresh water 3.Air 1.We use almost all the land; cities and buildings – our dwelling spaces; taking away animal habitat; luxury – demand for “brands” means more factories and more space used up to meet those demands 2.CA about to run out of fresh water – we cut off freshwater supply to a lot of places (like M.L.) for us to use. Oil spills destroy water quality 3.Not that we’re taking too much of it, but we are polluting it so that others can’t use it (China – factories). Destroying forests disrupt oxygen/carbon dioxide cycle. We’re supposed to share with everyone (like library books) but we’re destroying for others to use; poisoning air animals; ozone layer problems – green house gasses

4 th period DO NOW Abiotic ResourceHow humans have taken more than they should 1.Air 2.Land 3.Water 4.Salmon (biotic) and other water animals 5.Elephant tusks (ivory) 6.Electricity (Energy) 7.Trees (biotic) 8.Animal fur/hides 9.Animal meat (hunting and farming - biotic) 10.Metals 11.Oil (fossil fuels) 12.Landmarks 1.Pollution 2.Harvesting forests, clearing for homes (urban sprawl), mining, pollution (arsenic in soil) 3.Pollution and running out of fresh water 4.Overharvesting 5.Poaching for ivory 6.Over-usage 7.Harvesting trees and run out of air (oxygen cycle) 8.Fashion, taxidermy 9.For entertainment, food… 10.Buildings, cell phones, technology (un-recyclable) 11.Demand is high for cars

3 rd period DO NOW Salt water (?) Animals (cattle) (biotic)– harvesting too many for food Land Clean air Clean water

Wood: we take away from animal habitat. We use the trees to make paper and houses; sometimes we strip just the bark. As trees are cut down, earth’s air will be polluted – begin buying air?? If we lose trees, the rate of oxygen will lower (Lorax?). Cutting down too many trees will also cause erosion and water levels to drop… Air: compete with animals for fresh air Water: we use so much for dishes, drinking it, showering, etc. Taking away from water creatures’ habitats. Food? Soil: Crops Space: we occupy too much and some is wasted Ocean: pollution and over-harvesting Energy? (global warming)– melts ice caps and causing water levels to rise Harvest too many animals

Paragraph # Main Idea (1 per paragraph) Details (2-3 per main idea) 1212 Humans take too much water even when not necessary The water at M.L. is drying up quickly. humans want a lot of water M.L. is running out of water LA is taking freshwater from the streams that feed M.L. Diversion dams are blocking the freshwater inflow In 20 years, the lake level dropped 6.5 meters.
