1 Describe the settings in Ship Breaker. Add specific details.
Entry Task

2 Setting -move the plot forward.
The time, place, environment of the story. The setting can be simply the background, or it can play a very important role in a story… -move the plot forward. -give information/insight about the characters. -create a mood for the story.

3 Move the plot forward If the setting directly affects the character, or the character’s decision, it’s moving a plot forward. Is there a storm that requires the character to leave? Is there a lack of water causing the character to move? Does the setting actually create a conflict?

4 Provide Information about Characters
The setting can give information about the characters. Think about the difference between someone raised in the country versus someone raised in the city. We immediately make assumptions about their personality based on that one piece of information.

5 Setting can… Setting can also play an important role in determining author’s purpose. Why did the author choose that setting? What message is given through the choice in setting?

6 Ship Breaker setting Dystopia: what is a dystopia?
What typically is a part of a dystopian society? What did setting contribute to the story overall?

7 Practice Choose three of the specific details you identified in your entry task and explain what the purpose was. Why did the author include that detail? What was its significance? Go beyond the obvious.

8 Partner paragraph Work with a partner to write a paragraph making the claim about the importance of setting in Ship Breaker. Decide on a claim about the significance of the setting, and then use your details as evidence. Add commentary to explain how the setting detail (evidence) is significant (connect to claim). Concluding sentence.

9 Paragraph layout Claim: answers prompt (what is the significance/importance of the setting) Evidence Commentary Concluding sentence.

10 Entry Task: 9/9/14: Grammar
For the following sentences, identify the part of speech and the definition or synonym(based on context and previous knowledge) of the underlined words. The decision affected everyone: no one was immune from the effects of that decision. We must all accept that everyone is different in every way, except for the fact that everyone is human.

11 Look at the quote of the day; respond to it.
Entry Task 9/10/14 Look at the quote of the day; respond to it. What does it mean to you? Do you agree/disagree? Why? Additional thoughts?

12 Paragraph revision/completion
Look over the feedback I provided. Revise where necessary, add detail (evidence) and commentary (analysis). What I noticed overall: evidence was basic and simplistic; claims were vague; evidence, and commentary didn’t always fit the claim. Add specifics from novel. Connect to the claim through commentary. Make sure concluding sentence builds off of paragraph focus.
