Questions for Course Evaluation
E. How has this course better equipped you to pursue truth about the world around you? F. How could a Christian make use of the ideas and skills taught in this course to fulfill her or his calling?

Researchers studying the effect of water temperature on the hatching of water python eggs assigned newly laid eggs to one of three temperatures: hot, neutral, or cold. The table below gives the data on the number of eggs and the number that hatched. How would determine whether there significant differences among the proportions of eggs that hatched in the three groups? If there are differences, what would you compute to describe those differences specifically?

The mean area of the several thousand apartments in a new development is advertised to be 1250 square feet. A tenant group thinks that the apartments are smaller than advertised. They hire an engineer to measure a sample of apartments. The 75 apartments measured have an average square-footage of 1210 square feet, with standard deviation 7 square feet. What would you do to determine if the tenant group is correct?

Manatees are large sea creatures that live in the shallow water along the coast of Florida. Many manatees are injured or killed each year by power boats. The table below gives data on manatees killed and powerboat registrations (in 1000s of boats) in Florida for the period 1977 to How would you determine whether there is strong evidence that the mean number of manatees killed increases as the number of powerboats increases? How would you give an estimate for how many more manatees would be killed if the number of boats registered increases by 1. What should you check before reporting your estimate as reliable?

A Gallup Poll on energy use asked 512 randomly selected adults if they favored “increasing the use of nuclear power as a major source of energy.” Gallup reported that 225 said “Yes.” Does this poll give good evidence that fewer that half of all adults favor increased use of nuclear power?

The presence of harmful insects in farm fields is detected by erecting boards covered with a sticky material and then examining the insects trapped on the board. To investigate which colors are most attractive to cereal leaf beetles, researchers placed six boards of each of four colors in a filed of oats in July. The table below gives data on the number of cereal leaf beetles trapped. Explain in words what ANOVA tests in this setting. What should you check to determine if results from ANOVA are reliable in this case?

Do piano lesson improve the spatial-temporal reasoning of preschool children? A study designed to answer this question measured the spatial-temporal reasoning of 34 preschool children before and after six months of piano lessons. The table below gives the data for 5 of the children for illustration purposes. What procedure would you use to estimate the effects of piano lessons on spatial-temporal reasoning? What computations would you need to make to carry out that procedure?
