Gateways let users share their Internet connection, and Firewalls provide security from hackers. Both Ethernet and Phone Line wiring are fairly secure since attacks require physical access. But Power Lines and RF extend outside for long distances. Serious security holes in Wi-Fi have been well publicized, and defeating WEP security is trivial with off-the-shelf products.
