INTERNATIONALIZATION Globalization is the flow of technology, economy, knowledge, people, values, ideas… across borders. Globalization affects each country in a different way due to a nation’s individual history, traditions, culture and priorities. Knight and DeWitt 1999

INTERNATIONALIZATION Internationalization of higher education is one of the ways a country responds to the impact of globalization yet, at the same time respects the individuality of the nation Dewitt and Knight 1999

INTERNATIONALIZATION The main aim of internationalization is to put in place programmes and activities which enable higher education – its institutions, students, staff – to take part effectively in a world characterized by increasing international cooperation, exchange and interdependence. INTERNATIONALIZATION Post secondary international education activity contributes $126M to $274M to the BC economy, depending on how estimates are calculated Add Private and K- 12 sectors and the figure increases to as high as $443M International students are “educational tourists” who make an impact similar to other tourists

INTERNATIONALIZATION NIC History 1995 – IE added to work of Dean Developmental Programs/ Aboriginal Education 1995 – Advisory committee continues work 1997 – 20% faculty position created for IE

INTERNATIONALIZATION NIC History 1997 – 2002 –incremental steps to build internal systems, marketing plan, homestay program 2002 – IE included as a key goal in NIC’s Education Plan 2003 – International Education Business plan developed
