Reiser (2008) defines the USR concept as “a policy of ethical quality of the performance of the university community (students, faculty and administrative employees) via the responsible management of the educational, cognitive, labour and environmental impacts produced by the university, in an interactive dialogue with society to promote a sustainable human development.”

Education- had, has and will have…. an important role in society Private vs public schools… Easily to identify the differences Let look on some …randomly selected futures -Public education means tradition, stability, is guaranteed by the public authorities in term of diploma’s recognition… -Private education… no tradition, and at the same time the chance to do rethink the teaching/learning process, flexible, ….

Looking back in time What teaching look like 10 years ago? How about 20 years ago? The teacher’s role in the learning process? A met my first computer in 1996! It was the most discovery in my entire learner experience. Scaring vs pleasant experience!

Internet… can you live today without it? I access internet with dial-up connection for the first time in 1997-1998….and I has disconnected so many times…frustrating isn’t it? Slow, difficult to search, questioning if the information are reliable…. Equally good/bad memories conclusion=I had the world at one click a way.

Smart growth Smart growth means improving the performance in: education (encouraging people to learn, study and update their skills) research/innovation (creating new products/services that generate growth and jobs and help address social challenges) digital society (using information and communication technologies)

The 5 targets for the EU in 2020 1. Employment 75% of the 20-64 year-olds to be employed 2. R&D / innovation 3% of the EU's GDP (public and private combined) to be invested in R&D/innovation 3. Climate change / energy greenhouse gas emissions 20% (or even 30%, if the conditions are right) lower than 1990 20% of energy from renewables 20% increase in energy efficiency 4. Education Reducing school drop-out rates below 10% at least 40% of 30-34–year-olds completing third level education 5. Poverty / social exclusion at least 20 million fewer people in or at risk of poverty and social exclusion

Enhancing e-skills Over 50% of Europeans use the internet daily – but 30% have never used it at all! Moreover, disabled persons face particular difficulties in benefiting fully from new electronic content and services.
