How does one become a parole & probation officer?
Education: --Bachelors degree in social science preferred. Experience: --One year of experience in social service field. can substitute experience for college. Qualities sought: --The best parole & probation officers have a good balance between law enforcement and social work.

Training: Department of Public Safety Standards & Training.
Five week academy. Defensive Tactics Confrontational Simulation Firearms Evidence Based Practices Classroom work

Lane County Parole & Probation Services.
33 full time PPO’s 2 full time Correction Tech’s 6 full time office assistants 4 supervisors 1 manager Hiring 6 PPO’s, 1 office assistant and 1 correction tech.

The Criminal Justice System
How does someone get on parole or probation? Crime is committed. District Attorney files on case. Person goes to Court. Person is convicted and sentenced by the Judge.

Types of Supervision: Probation Post Prison Supervision Board
Jurisdiction is the Court. Post Prison Supervision Board Parole Board has jurisdiction. Post Prison Supervision Local Control Local Supervisory Authority has jurisdiction.

Specialized Caseloads & Sizes
Domestic Violence Three full-time PO’s, average caseload size 92 Sexual Offenders Six full-time and three part-time PO’s, average caseload size 75 Risk assessments; Stable/Acute, Static 99, OCMS Gang Two to Three PO’s, average caseload size is 80 Vice Narcotics One full-time PO, average caseload size 90 General Caseload, average size is 100

What We Do: Main job/goals of a parole & probation officer:
Supervise 3500 offenders on parole & probation. Provide community safety. Help offenders successfully re-enter the community by improving life skills and addressing needs. Hold offenders accountable. Act as change agents.

What happens on supervision?
Initial intake. Supervision expectations and Conditions are discussed. PO assesses criminogenic needs. --Anti-social values & behaviors --Criminal Peers --Low Self Control --Dysfunctional Family Ties --Substance Abuse --Criminal Thinking

What happens on supervision cont.
Case plan developed and referrals made. Drug & Alcohol Treatment --Emergence Endeavor is free, Bridge Program $25 week. Length depends on need. Sex Offender Treatment --average length 18 months. Cost $225 to $600 Domestic Violence Treatment --average length 52 weeks. Cost $100 Gambling Treatment --free treatment through lottery funds

General Conditions of Supervision:
Pay supervision fees, fines, restitution or other fees ordered by the Court or Board. Not use or possess controlled substances except pursuant to a medical prescription. Submit to testing of breath or urine for controlled substance or alcohol use if the offender has a history of substance abuse or if there is a reasonable suspicion that the offender has illegally used controlled substances.

General Supervision Conditions Cont.
Participate in a substance abuse evaluation as directed by the supervising officer and follow the recommendation of the evaluator if there are reasonable grounds to believe there is a history of substance abuse. Remain in the State of Oregon until written permission to leave is granted by the DOC or a county community corrections agency. Offender automatically waives extradition if offender absconds supervision out of State.

If physically able, find and maintain gainful full-time employment, approved schooling, or a full-time combination of both. Change neither employment nor residence without prior permission from the DOC or a county community corrections agency. Permit the supervising officer to visit the offender or the offender’s residence or work site, and to conduct a walk-through of the common areas and of the rooms in the residence occupied by or under the control of the offender.

Consent to search of person, vehicle or premises upon the request of a representative of the supervising officer if the supervising officer has reasonable grounds to believe that evidence of a violation will be found and submit to fingerprinting or photographing, or both, when requested by the DOC or a county community corrections agency for supervision purposes.

General Supervision Conditions Cont.
Obey all laws, municipal, county, state and federal. Promptly and truthfully answer all reasonable inquiries by the DOC or a county community corrections agency. Not possess weapons, firearms, or dangerous animals. Report as required and abide by the direction of the supervising officer.
