Think about this… Why do we need packaging? Why do some products come packaged and other products do not? What kinds of products come without packaging?

Brainstorming In groups of 4, try to decide what the functions/purposes of packaging are. You must also come up with examples to illustrate your ideas! The group that comes closest to the ACTUAL Functions of Packaging wins Moolah!

Functions of Packaging Protection ▫ from breakage bubble wrap, foam ▫ from germs, air, sunlight, dust/dirt (air tight seals) ▫ Protect the consumer: safety seals, child-proof, warning labels, tampering, theft (sensor tags, cotton in medicine bottles) ▫ Helps to ensure the product remains safe and high quality

Functions of Packaging Promotion ▫ re-usable after the original contents are consumed drinking glasses, jewellery boxes ▫ Tie-ins with movies or coupons for other products ▫ Use of popular figures to attract attention ▫ Promoting a cause environment, illnesses, poverty, children’s aid, natural disasters

Functions of Packaging Appearance and Branding ▫ helps customers identify a brand or product shapes, colour ▫ Attractive packages are colourful and eye- catching with graphics ▫ Must design the packaging with the assumption that it will look good from any angle

Functions of Packaging Information ▫ Labelling laws require specific information to be included (refer to textbook notes)

Functions of Packaging Consolidation ▫ contain the product, to keep it all together Liquids or small items in bottles, cans or jars Shrink wrapping boxes together for the same retailer/destination Easier to ship, store and display

Functions of Packaging Convenience ▫ Packaging a product so that it is easy to carry (transport) and use ▫ Special handles, grips, re-sealable bags and boxes
