RUSSELL BRYANT WALTHAMSTOW SCHOOL FOR GIRLS Good practice using the MLE and lessons we’ve learned – from a secondary school perspective

Context Walthamstow school for Girls 900 pupils In temporary accommodation for 18 months (ex-Warwick School for Boys building) Moved back to our Church Hill site January 2010. Started using Fronter in September 2008 June 2010 approximately 10,000 logins per month All classrooms have PC and IWB 700 ICT devices throughout the school

Where to start? Get the leadership team on board – an MLE is BIG! Designate key roles – Fronter Champion (curriculum), Fronter Champion (Technical), ICT Reps – one per faculty – Time Ensure that broadband and hardware can do the job Training for all staff – feedback from all staff – what are the blockers and enablers? Plan – overall structures – buildings; corridors; rooms; groups and access control Plan – initial focus + training + access to PCs Consider how the MLE can add value to existing structures

Building success Monitor and evaluate - feed this back into project development (portfolio tool) Bring in other stake holders – students, parents, governors – How does an MLE meet their needs? Continuously develop content and begin to experiment with a wide range of tools e.g. Forums, Tests, Hand-ins, Courses and Fronter Documents Provide constant training opportunities Share good practice

Key documents Annual student and staff ICT audit Staff feedback sheets Training – Fronter User level 1, Fronter User Level 2, Fronter Developer Level 1 School Improvement plan Job descriptions for key personnel Case studies to showcase success www.wfmle.co.uk MLE Waltham Forest 2010 Fronter room

Top Tips Develop an information feedback loop – Take a look at successful social networking sites. Don’t assume that great content will automatically be used - Be pro-active in selling your MLE to stakeholders Be aware of access and security issues – it’s crucial to get these right. Ensure that the leadership team take a lead and that time and/or money are available for developing the MLE. Continuous training and evaluation. And finally – only use an mle when it adds value.
