Shared Governance UserGroup (2 nd Thurs 7:30-8:30am) Purpose of this group is to identify and meet the immediate and ongoing needs of this group of Chairs, Co-Chairs, Sub-Chairs, Managers, and Assistant Managers in their collaborative journey along the shared governance continuum. Total Attendees 2005 233 (VUH, VCH, VMG/TVC, PHV, Home Health Care)

Shared Governance UserGroup Sessions January 2005 – Kick-off/Needs Assessment Networking Needs Sharing successful (and failed) strategies of various structures, processes, etc. Sharing how you maximize your resources, esp. people’s talents Reinforcement of each others’ skills and behaviors to apply in circumstances/situations Sharing logistical “secrets” for e.g. scheduling time for meetings and project work, monitoring group’s work to make sure they are moving forward with what they said they would How to educate staff and promote “readiness” and growth

Shared Governance UserGroup Sessions January 2005 – Kick-off/Needs Assessment Educational Needs How to motivate people and maintain enthusiasm, momentum Learn about multi-generational and multi-cultural dynamics regarding group process, problem solving, and communication Intermediate/advanced group process techniques Incorporate shared governance into mindset and orientation from the start Motivate action and cultivate enthusiasm and momentum Assess styles and talents; learn to maximize and put right people with the right project Awareness of formal educational opportunities Computer skills for “novices” Library search skills

Shared Governance UserGroup Sessions February 2005 – “Shark Patrol” – Networking & sharing strategies for implementing Shared Governance in your area. March 2005 – “Six Thinking Hats” – Looking at a decision from all points of view. A method of generating new ideas & solutions to problems. April 2005 – “Communication Stress/Multi-generations” – An overview of the different types of decades that are amongst us. Identify the styles, differences & challenges between the types. May 2005 – Shared Gov Educational Games - Hollywood Squares – an educational game of Shared Governance June 2005 – “Engaging Stakeholders in Joint Decision- Making” – Identify literature concepts regarding the management of stakeholders (multi-disciplines). Identify tools & techniques for working with stakeholders July 2005 – “Engaging Stakeholders in Joint Decision- Making Part II”

Shared Governance UserGroup Sessions August 2005 – “Overview Magnet Recognition – Introduction to Leadership Forces” September 2005 – “Overview Magnet Recognition – Introduction to Professional Practice Forces” October 2005 – “Overview Magnet Recognition – Introduction to Quality Forces” November 2005 – “Evidence-Based Practice” – Practical approaches to using evidence in daily nursing practice. December 2005 – “Lions, Otters, Beavers & Golden Retrievers – Using Your Personality to Improve Relationships” - Identify your personality type(s): lion, beaver, otter or golden retriever, your natural strengths & weaknesses based on this and strategies to improve communication & problem solving with individuals who have strengths & weaknesses different from your own.

Shared Governance Achievements October 2005 – Cultural Sensitivity – exploring diversity Development of MyVandy Portal – Shared Governance Community – templates, reports, agendas, minutes, newsletters Consultations prn Board Basics Workshop – 12 held in 2005 4 P’s Workshop – 3 held in 2005 2 nd round of inpatient board assessments completed 2005 2 nd round of outpatient board assessments to be completed summer 2006 Nurses Week 2005 – Unit/Clinic Board Poster Presentations Nurses Week 2006 – central committee visiting boards to get input on CE events; Unit/Clinic Board Poster Presentation again in 2006 DebiAnne Peterman reviewing/revising new staff orientation & will include Shared Governance Shelley Moore on the new manager/asst. manager orientation pathway Job Fair exposure Amount of active Unit/Clinic boards tripled within past 24 months
