Module 6 Service as action How can we foster meaningful action in our students? How does active-learning support our constructivist vision of education?

Understandings of the Module Module 6: Service as action MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and their developmentally appropriate responsibility in their community Acting is the effort to advance meaningful change in response to perceived opportunities Service requires that students are able to build powerful connections between what they learn in the classroom and what they encounter in the community When we learn by doing, we remember

Module 6 –Service as action Understandings for module 6: 1. MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and their developmentally appropriate responsibility in their community 2. Acting is the effort to advance meaningful change in response to perceived opportunities 3. Service requires that students are able to build powerful connections between what they learn in the classroom and what they encounter in the community 4. When we learn by doing, we remember. Short video Case-study Reflection about changes Making connections with other IB programs Read about service as action in the MYP True and False Thinking hats for thinking about service and action in my school Unit planner stage 2 4.”Practise, change, reflect” Practical application on authentic documents 1. “The background” External text resource 2. “Tune in” Audio/Visual input 3. “Make connections” MYP document How is the module organized?

Where have the areas of interaction gone? Areas of Interaction have developed into the global contexts Stronger emphasis on Approaches to Learning Community and Service will develop into Action

How do we define international education? Think in terms of three dimensions…. 5 How we relate to a shared humanity How we relate to our own culture How we relate to others Read about service and action in MYP HERE.

Service as action MYP learning extends beyond the intellectual to include not only socially responsible attitudes but also thoughtful and appropriate action, initiated by the student as a result of the learning process. This action will extend the student’s learning, or it may have a wider social impact. Both inquiry and action will clearly look different within and between each age group. MYP schools can meet the challenge of offering all learners the opportunity to choose to act; to choose not to act; to decide on their actions; and to reflect on these actions

Module 6, part 1 – The Background 1.MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and their developmentally appropriate responsibility in their community 2.Acting is the effort to advance meaningful change in response to perceived opportunities 3.Service requires that students are able to build powerful connections between what they learn in the classroom and what they encounter in the community 4.When we learn by doing, we remember. Read about service as action in the MYP. Place close attention to the five stages of service and the learning expectations for MYP schools. Complete the True/False activity after you read to check your understanding.

Module 6, part 2 – Tune in 1.MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and their developmentally appropriate responsibility in their community 2.Acting is the effort to advance meaningful change in response to perceived opportunities 3.Service requires that students are able to build powerful connections between what they learn in the classroom and what they encounter in the community 4.When we learn by doing, we remember. Watch this short video about service and action, called “Bringing Learning to Life”. Complete the I see, I think, I wonder diagram below.Bringing Learning to Life Analyze a case-study of service as action in an IB school. Learning stories–A global learning story about responsible actionLearning stories–A global learning story about responsible action Try to identify how the 5 stages of service were developed in this specific case. Return to the forum and share your thoughts on the shift from community and service as an area of interaction to service as action as a fundamental feature of the programme. 9 Module 5, part 3 – Make connections with other IB programmes 1.MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and their developmentally appropriate responsibility in their community 2.Acting is the effort to advance meaningful change in response to perceived opportunities 3.Service requires that students are able to build powerful connections between what they learn in the classroom and what they encounter in the community 4.When we learn by doing, we remember. 10 Creativity, Action and Service in DP Read this short information about the DP Creativity, Action and Service and identify similarities and differences between both approaches by adding your thought to the diagram below.DP Creativity, Action and Service CAS in DP Service as action in MYP Share resources to present the importance of Service and Action in MYP in upcoming workshops.

Module 5, part 4 – Practical application 1.MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and their developmentally appropriate responsibility in their community 2.Acting is the effort to advance meaningful change in response to perceived opportunities 3.Service requires that students are able to build powerful connections between what they learn in the classroom and what they encounter in the community 4.When we learn by doing, we remember. This activity is based on Bono´s famous book, “The Six Thinking Hats” that explores six distinct thinking directions that challenge the brain. Some “hats” encourage us to think in ways we are conformable, while others might feel unnatural. Underneath each hat you will find a question about action. “Wear” at least three hats and respond to the stimulus question. For the case of the red hat (based on intuitive or instinctive reactions ), you must post your response in less than 30 seconds.

Action can become part of the MYP unit-planning process at several points: adding specific learning engagements to meet curriculum objectives through principled action, through service with others; providing students with ideas and opportunities through which they might choose to take or organize action themselves through service with others. Go back to the unit you designed and ask yourself: 1.To what extent does this unit engage my students in principled action? 2.What can I do to use this unit to initiate service? 3.Make necessary amendments and make sure to register the changes in another colour You will need to consider stage 2 of the unit planner, which includes: Content, Learning process and resources. Need more information on stage 2? Click here.

Understandings for session 6 Choose 1 of these to reflect upon in your journal MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and their developmentally appropriate responsibility in their community Acting is the effort to advance meaningful change in response to perceived opportunities Service requires that students are able to build powerful connections between what they learn in the classroom and what they encounter in the community When we learn by doing, we remember.
