1 LET’S GO FISHING Luke 5:1-11

2 1 On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. (Luke 5:1-2)

3 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.“ 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. (Luke 5:4-6)

4 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.“ 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken…(Luke 5:7-9)

5 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him. (Luke 5:10-11)

8 I. Carry the Gospel to all men
Jesus is not only the bearer of the Gospel. He is the Gospel Himself.

9 I. Carry the Gospel to all men
We must be convinced that the pure Gospel is effective for salvation. We must share the Gospel inclusively and not exclusively.

10 I. Carry the Gospel to all men

11 II. Depend on God for the results of following Him
Where they had exhausted their efforts in catching fish the night earlier, Jesus made possible a miraculous catch to the point that their nets and their boats could not bear any more.

12 II. Depend on God for the results of following Him
The power and authority of Jesus over all creation reassures us that nothing is beyond His control.

13 II. Depend on God for the results of following Him
There is no limitation to how God can use the ordinary things in life, even to things we are well familiar with.

14 II. Depend on God for the results of following Him
But when we allow God to step in, we can rely upon Him for results that our efforts cannot give.

15 III. Live out in submission to Christ
From calling Jesus as “Teacher,” he now called Him “Lord” and he bows down before Him. As disciples of Jesus, there is no other way to live but to be obedient and submissive to His Lordship in all of life.

16 III. Live out in submission to Christ
"Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men." (Luke 5:10) “…I will make you fishers of men.” (Matt. 4:19)

17 III. Live out in submission to Christ
Matthew 5:11 - they left their boats and nets to follow Christ.

18 III. Live out in submission to Christ
The challenge of choosing God to be our God involves surrender to His will in our lives.

19 III. Live out in submission to Christ
Jesus calls us His disciples not just to be part of His kingdom, but to be movers of it.
