IPC Notes Ionic Compound Names & Formulas

Remember… ions - atoms that have a positive or negative charge Oxidation number – the charge that an ion has from the gain or los of electrons

Remember… Metals tend to form ions by losing electrons, giving them an overall positive charge.

Remember… Nonmetals tend to form ions by gaining electrons, giving them an overall negative charge.

Ionic Compounds An ionic compound is made from a metal (positive ion) and a nonmetal (negative ion).

Ionic Compounds Though made from positively and negatively charged ions, an ionic compound is electrically neutral. The total charge of all the ions in a compound is ZERO!!!

Chemical Formulas A chemical formula tells you the type and number of atoms in the representative unit of a compound.

Writing Chemical Formulas 1 ) Write the symbol for the first element given with its oxidation number. +2

Writing Chemical Formulas 2 ) Write the symbol for the second element given with its oxidation number. +2

Writing Chemical Formulas 3) Criss cross the numbers and write them as subscripts without the positive or negative signs. ONLY THE NUMBERS CROSS…NOT THE + or -! ONLY THE NUMBERS CROSS…NOT THE + or -!

Writing Chemical Formulas 4) If there is a charge of one, do not write it. The one is implied. (just like in Algebra, you don’t write 1x) (just like in Algebra, you don’t write 1x)

Writing Chemical Formulas 5) If you have subscripts that are the same number with opposite signs (like +2 & -2) they cancel out.

Examples Barium & Chlorine

Examples Aluminum & Sulfur

Examples Calcium & Oxygen

Examples Sodium & Phosphorus

Examples Magnesium & Nitrogen

Examples Aluminum & Fluorine

Naming Ionic Compounds For naming an ionic compound, 1) Name the first element. 2) Name the second element, but change the ending to –ide. –ide.

Naming Ionic Compounds Example: Na 2 O Sodium oxide Example: MgCl 2 Magnesium chloride Example CaS Calcium sulfide

Name these:

Na 2 S

Name these: Na 2 S sodium sulfide

Name these: Na 2 S sodium sulfide KCl
