Welcome back everyone. This is our last meeting today. Does anyone have any question or comments from last two week’s lectures?

3 Today’s Agenda Introduction about Garlic. History of Garlic.
What are the uses? In today’s agenda to discuss about particular herb, garlic. CAM therapy is the very wide category, so it is hard to finish or talk about CAM therapy in detail in 3 lecture. So, I decided to narrow down my concentration to specific herb “Garlic”.

4 What is Garlic? Garlic is common name. It came from Latin name Allium Sativum. It belongs to the onion family Alliaceae. It includes shallots and leek. Garlic has been used throughout recorded history for both medicinal and culinary purposes. The garlic bulb is divided into sections called cloves. There is different kinds of the garlic, Elephant garlic or Russian garlic. It is a variant of the species leek and not considered a true garlic. Garlic is common name. Garlic has been used throughout recorded history for both medicinal and culinary purposes. The garlic bulb is divided into sections called cloves.

5 History of Garlic Garlic was a most common ingredient in Mediterranean and Europe. European beliefs once considered garlic a powerful ward against demons, werewolves, and vampires. To ward off vampires, garlic could be worn, hung in windows or rubbed on chimneys and keyholes. Garlic was rare in traditional English cuisine. It was a most common ingredient in the Mediterranean Europe. Builders of the ancient pyramids were said to eat garlic daily for enhanced endurance and strength. Garlic was placed by the ancient Greeks on the piles of stones at cross-roads, as a supper for Hecate. Roman emperors couldn't eat enough of it, as it was considered an antidote to poisons. The Spanish have long used garlic as a preservative which helps to add belief to it's anti-bacterial properties and whole books have been devoted to the health benefits of garlic.

Local grocery store, farmer’s market, vitamin shop contain fresh garlic or garlic pills. Garlic can be eaten raw, cook in meal or can taken as pills. 7 Facts About Garlic Garlic has germanium in it. Germanium is an anti-cancer agent, and garlic has more of it than any other herb. It can helps to regulate the body's blood pressure. Whether blood pressure is low or high, garlic can help equalize it. Garlic helps strengthen body's defenses against allergies. It helps loosen plaque from the artery walls. It regulates blood sugar levels In lab tests, mice fed garlic showed no cancer development, whereas mice that weren't fed garlic showed at least some. According to National Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, some evidence indicates that taking garlic can slightly lower blood cholesterol levels; studies have shown positive effects for short-term (1 to 3 months) use. However, an NCCAM-funded study on the safety and effectiveness of three garlic preparations (fresh garlic, dried powdered garlic tablets, and aged garlic extract tablets) for lowering blood cholesterol levels found no effect. Preliminary research suggests that taking garlic may slow the development of atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), a condition that can lead to heart disease or stroke. Evidence suggests that taking garlic may slightly lower blood pressure, particularly in people with high blood pressure. Some studies suggest consuming garlic as a regular part of the diet may lower the risk of certain cancers. However, no clinical trials have examined this. A clinical trial on the long-term use of garlic supplements to prevent stomach cancer found no effect. Recent NCCAM-funded research includes studies on how garlic interacts with certain drugs; its effects on liver function and the dilation and constriction of blood vessels; and the bioavailability.

Decrease platelet aggregation Lower serum triglycerides and LDL-cholesterol ( the bad type) levels Increase serum HDL-cholesterol (the good type) and fibrinolysis (the process through which the body breaks up blood clots.) Plus it stimulates the production of nitric oxide in the lining of blood vessel walls, a substance that helps them to relax. As a result of these beneficial actions garlic helps to prevent arteriosclerosis and thereby reduces the risk of heart attack or stroke. Two or three cloves a day have cut the risk of subsequent heart attacks in half in heart patients. One reason for these beneficial effects may be garlic's ability to reduce the amount of free radicals in the bloodstream. According to a study published in Life Sciences, a daily dose of 1 ml/kg body weight of garlic extract for a period of 6 months resulted in a significant reduction in oxidant (free radical) stress in the blood of arteriosclerosis patients. It's positive effect on the circulatory system improves blood flow throughout the body so has even been hailed as a cure for impotence!

Garlic contain anticancer and antioxidant compounds like quercetin, diallyl sulphide, allin and ajoene. Garlic can block cancer causing agents like nitrosamine and aflatoxin. The October 2000 issue of the American Journal of Nutrition had a summary of a number epidemiologic studies which showed that people who consumed cooked or raw garlic on a regular basis compared to those that ate little or none had about half the risk of stomach cancer and one-third less risk of colorectal cancer. According to American National Cancer Institute's, garlic is consider as cancer preventing herbs. The Iowa Women's Health Study discovered that women who included garlic in their daily diet had lower risks for colon cancer. Berries and citrus fruits, cruciferous vegetables, garlic and onions, green tea, omega 3 essential fatty acids, olive oil, tomatoes, soy products, red wine and dark chocolate are the food can prevent cancer.

Garlic and Immune System: Garlic has antioxidant property, so it will protect us with bacteria and some viruses attacks. Garlic also acts as a good cold medication, decongestant and expectorant. It is a surprisingly good source of vitamins C, B6 and the minerals selenium too.

Garlic contain Allicin, which prevent weight gain. By eating garlic daily, be can also maintain our weight, because it contain Allicin, which help us to control weight. This Allicin is also help us to lower blood pressure, insulin and triglyceride levels in laboratory animals fed a sugar rich diet.

For ear infection. For scratchy throats: Put a small slice of garlic in your mouth and suck on it for minutes and that will relive the throat pain. I still remember, When I was kid, my grandmother use garlic for ear pain and pain will goes away in couple days.

18 Any Questions? Everyone is concern about garlic smell. I read somewhere that if you eat 2-3 slice of lemon or lime after eating garlic, then you will not feel bad breath.
