2 What is government? Definition: A system by which a community, state or nation is governed – Governed means : controlled; organized Why do we need government? – Keep order

3 Monarchy Vocabulary MONARCHY: a government run by a king or queen; citizens have fewer rights INHERITED POWER: power is gained by birth rights (being born into the royal family)

5 Dictatorship vocabulary DICTATORSHIP: a harsh government run by a dictator; the citizens have few rights SEIZED POWER: taking control by force

6 Dictatorship Leader is the dictator ( does not refer to themselves as a dictator) Gain power by force Power is not shared Citizens have little to no rights – Ex. No freedom of speech, no religion allowed Citizens have very low civic participation ( not allowed to participate People live in fear – Leader must maintain power through fear Known for very strict rules and punishments Examples are : North KoreaNorth Korea

7 Democracy Vocabulary DEMOCRACY: a government run by the people; citizens participate by voting, high rights and liberties CONSTITUTION: plan of government RIGHT: something a person is allowed to do and is protected by law RESPONSIBILITY: something a person should do for their country

8 Democracy Citizens have high rights and participate in government – People have the power Rights are protected by the Constitution Constitution A leader is elected by votes from the citizens – Leaders mostly called presidents Citizens also elect other citizens to represent them in government – Ex. Senators, congress representatives Government is broken into specialized branches:branches – Each branch is in charge of one job/function of the government Legislative: makes laws Judicial : interprets the Constitution to make sure its being followed Executive: approves laws, military and foreign policy – This is so one branch is not more powerful than the other The USA and India are some of the largest democracies in the world

9 Constitutional Monarchy Vocabulary a government led by a Prime Minister, with a King or Queen as historical figure; citizens have a high level of rights

10 Constitutional Monarchy Similar to a democracy Citizens have high rights and participation in government Monarch is only for ceremony; don’t really have much power – Called the head of state Power is with the people who vote for leaders and representatives – Leader called the prime minister ( like a president) – Their legislative branch is called Parliament ( like Congress) Follow a people rights are protected by the Constitution Examples of Constitutional government would be Great Britain, Denmark, Japan, Sweden ect.
