Hominids Alive after Last Ice Age ► 3 kinds lived together simultaneously prior to last ice age (last Ice Age ended 10,000 years ago)  See the Smithsonian Interactive Hominid Timeline See the Smithsonian Interactive Hominid Timeline See the Smithsonian Interactive Hominid Timeline 1. Homo Florensiensis, the “Hobbits”, these guys died out first, last known body found in Indonesia was estimated to be about 17,000 years old 2. Homo Neanderthalensis, died out 28,000 years ago, prior to the last ice age 3. Homo Sapiens (Cro Magnons) and Homo Sapiens Sapiens (US), we descended from this group, and have the biggest brains ► What happened to the Neanderthals?  They could have lost to humans in war; they could have interbred with us.  DNA testing does show some evidence of Neanderthal genes mixed with ours. Various sources estimate that as much as 2% to 25% of European or Asian DNA is similar to Neanderthal DNA.

Part 2, Unit 1: Dr. East, 9/10/2013

Preview Question: ► Think: If you were stranded with your family in the wilderness, what would you need to do and to get in order to survive? What things would become very meaningful to you? ► _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ _______________________________________ __________________________________

Video: Visual Discovery ► Step 1: The place you’ll see in this video is a world heritage site. ► http://www.lascaux.culture.fr/#/en/02_00.x ml http://www.lascaux.culture.fr/#/en/02_00.x ml http://www.lascaux.culture.fr/#/en/02_00.x ml ► Step 2: Answer questions as we watch the video. We will pause in a few places to explore. ► Step 3: Read about the site. ► Step 4: Processing Activity

Processing Activity ► Question: How are ancient cave artists like modern day muralists and graffiti artists? ► Activity: Be the modern “cave artist”. ► Step 1: On an 8.5’ X 11” sheet of paper draw a scene about something that you see or do that’s in your daily environment. Choose something that is meaningful to you. Make sure there are lots of clues about your world and mind in the drawing. ► Step 2: On the backside of the paper, list at least five material objects “artifacts” that someone might find near your art. Maybe you drew your art on your apt. wall; maybe you drew it at some ceremonial meeting place … these objects that you list will become clues to modern detectives that try to interpret your life from your art and artifacts. ► *** Do not write your name on this art. When you turn this in to me, I will assign you a number. This work should be done anonymously. Do not tell your classmates what you are drawing or which drawing is yours.

Processing Activity: Detecting Modern Life ► Activity: Pretend you are a modern day anthropologist and you have stumbled upon interesting art. Nearby this art are some interesting clues that you think suggest some things about the artist and his or her life. ► Step 1: Write a paragraph interpreting what you see in the scene. This paragraph will be your anthropological findings. Be sure to explain your interpretation with reference to clues in the art and clues found at the scene. ► Step 2: Beside your name, include the # of the art that you drew. ► Step 3: Artists and Anthropologists meet and discuss the art and interpretations. ► Question: How easy/hard was it for the anthropologist to accurately interpret the art? What does this mean for accuracy in our interpretations of history?

Summing Up Hominids and Hunter- Gatherer Life ► Other hominids (upright walking and bipedal creatures) and humans (homo sapiens sapiens) evolved in East Africa. ► They migrated from East Africa between 100,000 and 400,000 years ago. ► Neanderthals and, later, Cro-Magnons (Ancient Humans) were both hunter gatherers and they survived by living off the land and hunting wild game.

► Early humans were nomads who migrated with the seasons and followed big game. ► They lived in “clans” of 50 to 100 people. ► They invented the first tools, fire, and simple weapons. They wore animal skins and developed an oral language. ► They buried their dead and had funeral ceremonies. ► AND, as evidenced by their cave art, they were thoughtful artists!
