Lesson Objective To learn more about early Nazi propaganda The poster here translates as: Berlin! Never forgotten, never again! Early on, used in a variety of mediums, including cartoons, newspapers, and, most importantly, posters. Posters exhibited Volksgemeinschaft (unified national community – the general interest before self interest)

The illusion Hitler was trying to establish here was messianic in character. What does this reveal about Hitler and how he viewed himself?

May 1920 poster, Translation: What do we want? In small text: Jews forbidden. Typical Nazi poster from 1921; Jews not allowed Do you see any warnings in the translations?

Translation: Germany Awakens. From this image, can you determine how the Nazis viewed themselves?

Undated; Admission Price: War injured and the unemployed half price, Jews not admitted This poster was meant to be reproduced in large quantities to provide notice of NSDAP meetings. Look at how the male faces are all in order, in almost perfect symmetry. What does this reveal about this poster? How does this poster compare with the next one?

1930 poster Translation: The Red War. Mother or Comrade? Man or Machine? God or the Devil? Blood or Gold? Race or Bastard? Popular music or jazz? National Socialism or Bolshevism? Why were these categories so important to the Nazis? In your opinion, were the Nazis fighting an ideological war as well?

Undated (early 1930s). Translation: Death to Lies. Once again, body image was central to Nazi ideology and propaganda. The snake is marked with the words Marxism and high finance. Why? What is the purpose of the forearm?

1930 posters Poster one: The people rise! They vote List 9. Poster two: Freedom and bread! Compare the images. In your opinion, which poster was more effective?

From the July 1932 Reichstag election Translation: We women vote for List 2: the National Socialists Why did the Nazis especially target women for votes?

A poster from the November 1932 Reichstag election. Translation: Free the Soil, We Farmers Vote for Hitler Why did the Nazis target the farming class for votes?

Undated, early 1930s. Define each of the images you see here. Consider also the use of symbolism.

What was the purpose of this poster? Why was the male body used as propaganda? What does the image reveal about the Nazi plan to create a master race? Translation: Never again! Vote for Hitler!

 Here is another example of a masculine image. Without knowing the translation, what does the portrait of the German worker convey?  This poster promises that if the Nazis won the election in the Reichstag, that the voter would receive work and bread. Why did this message resonate with German voters in 1932?

The slide assignment has ended.
