AMREF’s Work in Tanzania For more than 55 years, AMREF has partnered with and supported the government, individuals, civil society organizations(CSOs) and communities to address bottlenecks in the health system. We focus on women and children through strengthening of community structures and health systems – developing human resources for health in particular using primary health care approach

Understanding the Problem In Tanzania and most of sub Saharan Africa about 50% of pregnant women still deliver without the services of a Skilled Birth Attendant(SBA) In Tanzania about 7,000 women die every year during child birth and several thousands more are left with chronic disabilities such as obstetric fistula There is an acute shortage of nurse midwives especially in rural areas

About 200,000 mothers die each year in sub Saharan Africa(SSA) due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth One million children are left without a mother each year in SSA as result of maternal deaths Most of these maternal deaths are easily preventable by ensuring access to basic medical care. One midwife can provide basic medical care to about 500 mothers each year and conduct deliveries on 100 mothers per year Tanzania’s midwifery gap is estimated at 9,941 midwives by 2015 (The State of the World’s Midwifery Report, 2011) Facts and Figures 5

Proposed Solution Stand Up for African Mothers(SU4AM) campaign to raise awareness about the plight of African mothers and pregnant women Alleviate critical shortage of Skilled Birth Attendants Mobilize resources and goodwill from all stakeholders play their part In Tanzania, we aim to support training of 1,000 new Nurse Midwives(NMs) and upgrade the skills & knowledge of 2,800 existing NMs using eLearning by 2015

Fundraising Approaches to Achieve our Targets A public private partnership(PPP) fundraising model that mobilizes resources from all stakeholders (DP, donors, Faith – Based Organization, Media, Corporates), government and communities Conducting a number of fundraising events such as the fundraising Gala Dinner on October 11, 2013 to support the implementation Commitment and contributions for AMREF staff and their networks

The SU4AM campaign was launched on May 15 2012, By HE First Lady Salma Kikwete who is the Campaign Ambassador The AMREF international Stand Up for African Mothers campaign aims to train 15,000 midwives in 13 priority countries in Africa out of which 3,800 will be in Tanzania by 2015 Stand Up for Tanzania Mothers (SU4AM) Campaign 2012/2015 8

Goal: To contribute to sustained reduction of maternal deaths in Tanzania by 2015 and beyond Broad Objective: To contribute towards achievement of the Tanzanian National Road Map Strategic Plan to accelerate reduction of Maternal, Newborn and Child Deaths by three quarter by 2015. Specific Objectives To raise awareness about the important role played by nurse midwives in the provision of quality MNCH services in Tanzania To raise Tanzania Shillings equivalent of at least USD 11 million for training Nurse Midwives in Tanzania by 2015 To increase number of nurse midwives by 1,000, and upgrade the skills and knowledge of 2800 existing nurse midwives in Tanzania by 2015 10

How Can Development Partner’s Participate? Becoming a partner in the SU4AM campaign by advocating for more resources allocation by the government for midwifery training Becoming a champion for the SU4AM Campaign within your organization and networks Sponsoring a Nurse Midwife, or sponsoring 10, 20, 50 Nurse Midwives for a 2 year through eLearning or Pre-service training @ $3,000 Supporting with funding to fill the resources gap of US$ 10 million so that we can achieve our goal of training 3,800 NM by 2015 13
