8 IEEE 802.11 Standards - Wireless IEEE 802.11a, provides 54Mbps data rate at 5GHz. IEEE 802.11b, or Wi-Fi, has a maximum data rate of 11Mbps, at 2.4GHz. IEEE 802.11g, provides 54Mbps data rate at 2.4GHz. IEEE 802.11n, a proposed standard to provide 540 Mbps data rate at 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, using MIMO (Multiple-In, Multiple-Out) MIMO transmits two or more data streams in the same radio channel at the same time. With MIMO, the maximum data rate per channel grows linearly with the number of different data streams that are transmitted in the same channel.
