18 Big Deal 2: The New Commandment  Why this preamble is significant?  Jesus is about to depart from this world being the only real example of love.  Because He is God, He is Love – 1 John 4:7-8  Jesus was about to prove that love.  How would the disciples now see love?  Jesus was trying to get the disciples to transfer their love for Him to one another.  The vertical was to become horizontal! 29 Big Deal 3: Marks of a True Believer 1. The first mark of a disciple is to continue in the Word that Jesus taught.  John 8:31  We must hear that Word – read it, study it, and even memorize it!  Once we have heard the Word, we must continue in it. The Real Deals John 13:31-35

31 John 13:35 (NASB) 35 By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

35 John 15:8 (NASB) 8 My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be My disciples.

The third mark of a disciple is bearing fruit.  John 15:8  This tells us that the bearing of fruit will glorify God, not that it effects humanity.  We must recognize our own inability to produce the fruit.  We must remain attached to the fruit bearer! 37 Application What does Jesus’ death mean to you? What will His second coming mean – glory or panic? Do those who are not yet believers see God and His love in you? Are you really one of Jesus’ disciples? How do you and others know? The Real Deals John 13:31-35
