HEADWAY – the brain injury association Aims to:- promote understanding of all aspects of brain injury provide information, support and services to people with brain injury, their families and carers.

FACTS & FIGURES Every year, more than a million people attend hospital A&E departments in the UK following a head injury. In 2007, 88,835 people were admitted to hospital each year as a consequence of traumatic brain injury. Head injury is the foremost cause of death and disability in young people. Approximately 50% of deaths in people under 40 are due to head injury. Males are two or three times more likely to have a brain injury than females. This increases to five times more likely in the 15 - 29 age range.

HEADWAY UK Headway is a charity set up to give help and support to people affected by brain injury with a network of 110 local Groups and Branches throughout the UK offering a wide range of services, including rehabilitation, carer support, social re-integration, community outreach and respite care. The services available vary, depending on local needs and resources. Headway UK provides support to the local Groups and Branches and helps to deliver high quality services through guidance on policies, procedures, standards and training. Additionally: We operate a UK Helpline We produce a range of booklets containing information about aspects of brain injury for those directly affected, plus professionals, employers and members of the public. We promote understanding of brain injury and its effects We lobby for better support and resources to be made available by statutory health and social care providers. We campaign for measures that will reduce the number of brain injuries

Headway Gateshead & South Tyneside Community Development Officer Appointed 19 th April 2010 with the remit of developing services for people affected by brain injury. Increase in membership Re-vamp of current website Photography project Raised monies of activities and transport Community initiatives in place – volunteering/health trainers/timebank (volunteering scheme)/community allotment

Headway Gateshead & South Tyneside The Youth Group will: provide much-needed social contact for young people aged between seventeen to twenty-eight, including an informal ‘buddy’ system create a precedent in the North East region; a self- governing group of and for young adults with Acquired Brain Injury promote independence, focussing on skill-sets such as travel, shopping, social interaction, and communication increase self-confidence and esteem in members through learning and consolidating new proficiencies as well as the through the autonomous running of the group
