Question of the Day Question: What do you think is meant by “Alternative Energy?” Answer: … … … Turn In: 19.2 Worksheet (1/2 Page)
3
Electricity
4
What is electricity? Electricity is the flow of electrons from negative to positive
5
How did we discover electricity?
Many people think Benjamin Franklin discovered electricity with his famous kite-flying experiments in 1752, but electricity was not discovered all at once.
6
Discovery of Electricity
In 1800, Alessandro Volta, an Italian scientist, created the first battery What is a battery? Device that can convert stored chemical energy into electricity In 1800, Alessandro Volta, an Italian scientist, soaked paper in salt water, placed zinc and copper on opposite sides of the paper The reaction created electricity Volta had created the first electric cell. By connecting many of these cells together, Volta was able to “string a current” and create a battery.
7
The First Electric Generator
1821: Michael Faraday was the first one to realize that an electric current could be produced by passing a magnet through a copper wire this was the first generator
8
Electricity for Everyone
1879: Thomas Edison invents the light bulb 1882: He designs and builds the first electric power plant How we get our electricity today
10
How much would that cost?
If they used 200 kWhr in 1/7 sec At a cost of .1 $/kWhr for 12 hours $ = 200 kWhr x 12hrs x 3600s x $ s hr kWhr = $508,235/ night
11
How do we generate electricity?
Burn something: coal, natural gas, oil, “Nuclear Fuel” Heat water Steam turns a turbine (fan) Turbine spins an electric generator These steps generate the MAJORITY of the electricity we use.
12
Generating Electricity
Why does he wear a metal suit? What are the 3 things he is afraid of?
13
Electric Generator Function
In a power plant the spinning of magnet relative to a coil of copper wire generates electricity
14
Electrical Generation
Which spins in a hydroelectric power plant generator, the magnet or the coil of wire? What do they do to the voltage before they deliver electricity to the home?
15
Electricity Generation
CO2 & others Fuels: Coal, Oil, Natural gas Fire
16
Nuclear
17
Is there a better way? Burn something Heat water Turn a turbine
Generator generates electricity which can be sent to homes and businesses
18
Hydropower In this example, what is turning the turbine to make electricity?
19
Geothermal In this example what is providing the heat to make steam? Where in the world would you have to be to use this type of energy?
20
Geothermal How deep are geothermal wells?
What do they use the steam for? Why is geothermal considered a sustainable energy source?
21
Wind Power
22
Is there an even better way?
Burn something Heat water Turn a turbine Take in solar energy and convert it to electrical energy
23
Solar Panels Solar panels convert photons to electricity
24
Solar Power Why is solar power important for the Brazilian village?
What could solar powered airplanes replace?
