Objectives Students will be able to identify and explain: Best practices Role expectations Challenges Goals of teaching Effective teachers Authentic relationships Democratic and socially just classrooms “Jobs” in teaching Models of teaching Importance of reflection
6
When was this written? Who wrote it? “…home life has shriveled, city children [are] left to the street… school life and work [are] mechanical, and mass methods that [ignore] individuality and even child nature [are] everywhere…”

8
Best Practices What part is a science? What part is an art? POCA RAP?
9
Role Expectations Agree or Disagree? Why? Good health Psychologically stable Invested in the community (e.g. own a home) Solid preparation (including pedagogy) US citizenship Socially acceptable use of leisure time Ethical character
10
Challenges Rank these challenges: Gaining new knowledge Accountability for student learning Using standards Using technology (iGeneration) Understanding diversity Staying open-minded Staying reflective to improve the classroom Managing a classroom effectively Being a leader Being organized with classroom materials
11
Your view? Positivist (objectivist) Vs Constructivist (social and cultural)
12
Discuss Agree or Disagree? Why? It is fair to hold teachers accountabloe for the learning of every student.
13
Goal of teaching What is it?

Effective Teachers Personal qualities Social justice Reflection and lifelong learning Knowledge base Repertorie (Compare these to the expectations…)
15
Authentic Relationships “I” Passion Truthfulness Explicit expecations
16
Democratic and Socially Just Classroom What does this mean? How can you do it? High expectations – where do they fit in? Cultural expectations – where do they fit in?
17
Knowledge Base for Teachers Knowledge of learners and their development Concept of subject matter and curriculum goals Pedagogy – PCK, Assessment, Management, ZPD Multiple ways that “work” Build your repertoire
18
“Jobs” of Teaching Grease the wheels with some O.I.L. O – Organization I – Instruction L – Leadership
19
Models of Teaching How many can you name? Which are traditional (teacher centered)? Which are constructivist (learner centered)?
20
Discuss Which models will you use? When will you use them? Which do you think will become the most important in your future classroom? What organization roles do teachers have? What leadership roles do teachers have?
21
Reflection What does it mean? Why is it important? When should you do it? How should you do it? Why do so many teachers leave out this part of teaching? What does it do to the growth of the teacher if it is left out?
22
Stages of Teacher Deveolpment Survivial Teaching to the situation Teaching for student results Dependent on perspective and responsibility (who’s is it?) Problem in class = Problem with teaching
23
Safeguards What can you do to help keep all of these “parts and pieces” to the art and science of teaching safe? How can you safeguard against forgetting one or not implementing it? Why is thinking of a safeguard important?
24
Review Can you give one example of a teacher’s: Best practice? Role expectation? Challenges? Goal? Effectiveness? Authentic relationships? Democratic and socially just classroom? Knowledge base (what 3 prongs are needed?)? “Jobs?” Ways/models to use? Reflection?
25
Key Terms/Questions? Demographic assumptions? Evidence-based practice? Mean scores? Novice teachers? Standard deviation? What else?
