Systems: groups of parts working together TEKS 2.6B Parts can do things when put together that they cannot do by themselves

Parts of a System What can each of these parts do separately? Fabric Boat Rope Logs

A System Altogether the parts could make a system called a sailboat What can a sailboat do that logs, fabric, a boat and rope cannot do by themselves?

A Sailboat as a System Wood can float, but not in a specific direction. A boat can float and move with water currents. Fabric hanging on a line can move with the wind. A rope can be used to tie things together. Put together, all of these items can make a system called a sailboat. The parts work together to make a system that can use the wind to move very fast in a specific direction.

Parts of a System What can each of these parts do separately ? Leaves A Trunk Roots Acorns Bark

A System Altogether the parts make a system called a tree What can a tree do that the separate parts cannot do?

A Tree as a System Leaves absorb sunlight and make food A trunk provides support Roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil Acorns can grow into new trees Bark protects the tree and holds in moisture Altogether, a tree can take in sunlight, water and gases to produce food. A tree can also stand upright, even in the wind. A tree can produce seeds, which later become new trees.

TAKS Question Look at this picture of a bicycle. Explain how the rider, the pedals, the chain and the wheels work together to make the bicycle move.

Answer The bike rider provides the force to move the bicycle by pushing on the pedals. The chain is attached to the pedals, and this makes the chain go around. The chain is also attached to the rear wheel. When the chain goes around, so does the rear wheel. When the wheels move, the bicycle moves.

Parts of a System Check out this website: http://autorepair.about.com/cs/funstuff/l/bl_honda.htm In what ways is a car an example of a system? What can a car do that each of the individual parts cannot do?
