2. The Points System
MVC keeps track of individual driving records through a point system that assigns points to each traffic violation, moving or otherwise.
Two points will be added to driving records for offenses committed in states that belong to Interstate Compacts to which New Jersey belongs.
Up to 3 points will be subtracted from the driving record every 12 consecutive months a motorist is not convicted of an offense or suspended.
After the accumulation of 4 or more points you are required to attend a remedial training class.
Motorist accumulating between 12 and 14 points in a 24 month period will receive a Notice of Scheduled Suspension by mail from MVC.

3. Moving Violations – Points Values

5. Driver License Restoration
After a driver license is restored, or after completion of the MVC Driver Improvement Program or a Probationary Driver School Program, a motorist will be on probation for one year.
During probationary period, drivers convicted of two or more moving violations totaling four or more points must enroll in the Probationary Driver School Program.
$100 dollar fee.

6. Surcharges Violation Surcharge

7. Vehicle Information
New Jersey motorist must title and register each vehicle before legally driving on public roads.
Registration documents must always be available to show law enforcement officers.
New state residents are required to title and register within 60 days of moving to New Jersey.
Then you must have the vehicle inspected within 14 days of having it registered.

8. Vehicle Inspection
All vehicles purchased new after 2000 do not require inspection for four years.
After initial four year cycle, vehicles must be inspected every two years.
Vehicle with expired inspection sticker may result in fines of $100-$200, 30 day imprisonment, and the MVC may revoke registration privileges.

9. Used Cars
Owners have the option to take the vehicle for inspection within 14 days after the registration applies or accept the time left on the previous owner’s inspection sticker.

10. Insurance
Liability auto insurance is mandatory in New Jersey. Every vehicle registered in New Jersey must have liability insurance.
Driving an uninsured vehicle can result in fines, community service, license suspension, and insurance surcharges.

11. Graduated Driver License (GDL)
New Jersey’s Graduated Drivers License (GDL) program introduces driving privileges to first-time drivers and applicants under 21 years old.

12. Special Permit Restrictions
Must be at least 16 years old.
Must have signed guardian consent.
Must be enrolled in approved behind-the-wheel driving training course.
An approved instructor must purchase the permit.
Must pass MVC’s knowledge and vision test.
Must have permit for at least 6 months.
Must have supervising driver who is at least 21 years old, has a NJ drivers license, and has three years driving experience.
Passengers must be from the same household, and 1 other person.
The driver and all passengers must wear seat belts.
No driving between 11:01 pm and 5:00 am.

13. Examination Permit Restrictions
This is any resident who is at least 17 years old.
All the same restrictions apply as special permit except the driver does not have to complete behind-the-wheel instruction to receive permit.

14. Provisional Driver License Restrictions
Passengers must be from the same household, and 1 other person.
The driver and all passengers must wear seat belts.
No driving between 11:01 pm and 5:00 am.
Driver must be at least 17 years old.
Must pass MVC’s road test.
Must have license for 1 year.
Basic Driver License
Must be 18 years old
Must have completed 1 year of unsupervised driving.
Must pay required fee.
The fine for violation of the GDL permit or provisional license restrictions in $100.00

15. Manual Info.
Studded snow tires and chains may be used from Nov. 15 to April 1.
In city driving it is good practice to look at least 12 seconds ahead.
If you vehicle drifts off the roadway you should slow down and slowly turn back onto the pavement.
If you brakes suddenly give out, you should shift to a lower gear and pump the brakes.

16. Manual Info.
If a vehicle is passing you, you should slow down and make it easier for the vehicle to pass.
If a school bus is stopped at a school. You may pass at 10 mph.
Driving under the influence of alcohol means that your senses or judgment are impaired by alcohol.
You may not park within 10 feet of a fire hydrant
If you have a .05% BAC, the risk of you causing a motor vehicle collision doubles.

17. Manual Info.
In adverse weather a truck needs 25% more stopping distance.
Altering a drivers license may result in $1,000 dollar fine, up to 6 months imprisonment, and loss of your driving privilege.
You may not park within 50 feet of a stop sign.

18. Manual Info
Failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk results in $500 fine, up to 25 days in prison, 6 month license suspension, 2 point on your license and community service.
During the probationary 2 year period after receiving a special learners permit or an examination permit, a motorist much enroll in a Probationary driver program if convicted of 2 or more moving violations totaling 6 or more points.

19. Manual Info
Driving privileges will be postponed to any unlicensed person under 21 convicted of buying alcoholic beverages and or drinking and driving, graffiti, and setting false alarms.
The fine for violating any of the GDL permit restrictions is $100 and a possible suspension of driving privileges.
If you are involved in a motor vehicle collision resulting in injury while your driving privileges are suspended, you are subject to a fine, continued suspension and potential jail sentence.

20. Manual Info
If BAC is .15% the risk of causing a motor vehicle collision is 25 times greater.
A probationary driver under 21 may have dependents and one additional person unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
One reflect red decal must be displayed on the front and rear license plate.
