High School English Honors English Integrating Quotations

Integrating quotations: Making yourself sound smart like an expert.

Direct Quotations Borrowing authority -- Block quotations Integrating another’s words with your own

Block Quotations Researchers in the study, titled the Digital Youth Project and conducted primarily at the University of Southern California and the University of California at Berkeley, found that in our increasingly technological world, the constant communication that social networking provides is encouraging useful skills. The study looked at more than 5,000 hours of online observation and found that the digital world is creating new opportunities for young people to grapple with social norms, explore interests, develop technical skills and work on new forms of self- expression. (Goff)

Block Quotation Rules Use when quote extends beyond 4 lines (not 4 sentences). Single-space. Indent entire block.5 inches. Don’t use [“ “]. Notice the end – end quote with punctuation. Then, (authors’ names) and no more punctuation. If three authors, use all three names. If four, use; (Goff, et al.) If the quote had a page number, do this: (Goff, Agnew, Brownell 49)

Integrating Quotations Lends you credibility! Your audience has confidence in you! They respect what you say! They believe you. You need this. Because you’re not that smart.

Rules: No drop-in quotations. Social networking provides socially isolated or shy people a way to connect with other people that they may not otherwise have. “The study looked at more than 5,000 hours of online observation and found that the digital world is creating new opportunities for young people to grapple with social norms” (Goff). A reluctant teen can interact online, even if he is too reserved to talk in person.

Rules Supply at least one of the following to provide credibility to your source, and to you:  The author’s name and credentials, as necessary.  Source of information.  A brief summary of the content.

Introductory Signal Phrases Co-author of the study, Mizuko Ito, says, “there are myths about kids spending time online – that it is dangerous or making them lazy. But we found that spending time online is essential for young people to pick up the social and technical skills they need” (Goff). Lisa Tripp went on to say that technology, including YouTube, iPods and podcasting, creates avenues for extending one’s circle of friends, boosts self-directed learning and fosters independence (Goff).

Blending At beginning: The investigation suggested that “[p]arents, however, still have an important role to play when it comes to tweens, teens and social networking” (Goff).

Blending At the middle: “Parents, however,” suggested the study, “still have an important role to play when it comes to tweens, teens and social networking” (Goff).

Blending At the end: “Parents, however, still have an important role to play when it comes to tweens, teens and social networking,” suggested the study (Goff).

Putting It All Together T-R-I-A-C Topic Restrictor Illustration Analysis Conclusion

Putting It All Together Are social networking sites a good thing for socially awkward or shy teens? The studies seem to say so. According to researchers at the University of Southern California and the University of California at Berkeley, “spending time online is essential for young people to pick up the social and technical skills they need to be competent citizens in the digital age” (Goff). No one can argue that learning how to communicate is a good skill at any age. Indeed, with the almost total reliance on technology in our society, all members, not just shy teens, must be technologically savvy in order to succeed. Topic sentence and restrictor (T, R) Proof: background info and direct quotation (I) Discussion: how study supports author’s thesis (A) Conclusion: Reflects topic sentence without repeating it (C).
