2 Introduction The physical activity wasn´t usual in the Middle Age but there was an important number of events which has been the predecessors of several modern sports and physical activities. Bilingual PE Isabel Ruiz Serna2

3 Knighthood (lords, knights)Jousting and Tournaments Jousting was the medieval spectacle! Jousts were organiced by men called heralds. The knights used a lance Videos 1. 5 Medieval costumes These costumes were used by knights and soldiers in the jousting and combat, also during training. They were very heavy, so the knights dedicated enough time working out to develop their muscles and strength. BELTS, HELMETS, ARMOUR SPAULDERS, SABATONS, ARCH... 7 Games played by population Folk football: la Soule, Paume Irish traditions Bowling Prisoner´s base Blind man´s bluff/Hoodman´s blind La“Soule” consisted of two teams fighting for a big stuffed bran ball. To beat the other team it was necessary to lead and put the ball in a place previously accorded. Irish traditions were the basis of strength competitions. 11 MEDIEVAL AND RENAISSANCE Dances Music for dances The fists references for dancing in Middle Age were from Chretien de Troyes: “Some others were playing at childhood games - rounds, dances and reels, singing, tumbling, and leaping In what is probably Chretien's last work, Perceval, the Story of the Grail, probably written 1181-1191, we find:Perceval, the Story of the Grail "Men and women danced rounds through every street and square“ In a life of Saint Dunstan composed about 1000. the author tells how Dunstan, going into a church, found maidens dancing in a ring and singing a hymn.Saint Dunstan the term "carol" was first used in England for this type of circle dance accompanied by singing Bilingual PE Isabel Ruiz Serna11
