PUBLIC CONSULTATION MEETING 23 RD MARCH 2015 Consultation on the proposal to change Portsmouth Academy for Girls from a single sex school to a co-educational school

Public consultation  What’s it about?  Why change to co-educational?  Surplus capacity  Educational opportunities  Pressure on secondary school places  Timescale  Questions

What is being proposed?  The Thinking Schools Academy Trust (TSAT) and it’s Local Governing Body are consulting on the proposal to change the school from a single sex to co-educational school  No intention at this stage to change the existing age range of 11-16  TSAT and the Local Governing Body of the Academy are proposing the change and have therefore decided to consult  It is a genuine consultation - no decision has been made other than to consult  TSAT has support in principle from the City of Portsmouth Council to it’s proposals

Why change to co-educational ?  The opportunity for change and a re-organisation is based on the need to:  Address the issue of significant surplus capacity  Work better with Portsmouth junior schools  Address the future pressure on secondary school places  Address the impact of CPBS becoming a co-ed, this left PAG as the only single sex state secondary school in Portsmouth

Surplus capacity  Numbers on roll have dropped by over 40% in the last 4 years  Nearly 50% surplus space  Despite improved results in 2013 and 2014 which represented the best ever and third best GCSE results for the Academy numbers applying have not improved  Current admissions for Year 7 intake in September 2015 are below 100 against a planned Admission number of 200  Concern about the future viability of the Academy and ability to sustain a broad and balanced curriculum

From survival to successful & thriving

The Journey so Far

What choices?  Current city wide surplus of secondary school places forecast to significantly decrease - current surplus of +18% will change to a deficit of -4% by 2020  Pressure on secondary school places in the areas close to PAG will be particularly acute due to:  Existing pressures in terms of the catchment areas  Short to medium term pressures as a result of the proposed reduction in the PAN of Mayfield School and its growing popularity  Medium to long term future pressures as a result of major housing developments  While numbers on roll will inevitable rise due to the pressure on places, this will not address the surplus capacity issues in the short to medium term. As it stands PAG would not come near its current PAN until 2020

Benefits to PAG  Current pupils  Staff  Site  Parents  Portsmouth children

Concerns  Current pupils and the impact on them  Behaviour  Losing identify  Catering for the needs of girls from religious backgrounds that have strong feelings around single-sex education  More change
