13. *Remedial Training Classes  Under GDL Law a person is required to attend remedial training classes under the following conditions:  1) Accumulation of 4 or more points on your license  Note: Probationary period lasts for up to 2 years (Permit and Probationary License)

14. *City Driving  A good habit to practice and use is to look 12 seconds ahead when driving in the city  Why do you think this is an effective method to use while driving in the city?

15. Right Lane Passing  You may only pass the driver ahead of you when that driver is turning left and there is a proper lane on the right

16. *Blood Alcohol Content  For 21 or older, the state of New Jersey legal limit is.08  Four factors that will affect your BAC are:  1) The amount you drink  2) Your weight  3) Time you take to drink  4) Food eaten

17. *Alcohol  Remember:  A 12 oz. bottle of beer  A 5 oz. glass of wine  And 1 ½ ounces of 80 proof whiskey  Have the SAME amount of alcohol!

18. *Driving safely with Trucks & Busses  Be aware of the following factors while driving with Trucks & Busses:  1) Trucks and Busses have limited visibility  2) They have longer stopping distances  3) They have poor maneuverability

19. *Truck & Busses (Continued)  When driving with large trucks or busses you should always:  1) Give more roadway to a truck making a wide turn  2) Leave more space when stopping behind a truck or bus  3) Maintain a consistent speed when passing

20. *School Busses  When the red lights are flashing you may not pass a school bus and stop 25 feet away.  However if the red lights are not on you may pass at a speed of no more than 10 m.p.h.

21. Mopeds  Be aware that a valid basic driver’s license or a motorcycle license will also allow you to operate a moped without penalty

22. Implied Consent Law  Note that once you sign for your full license at 18 you are automatically giving your consent to take a breath test following an arrest for a suspected drinking and driving offense

23. *Changing your address  Note that by law you are required to report a change of address to the Division of Motor Vehicle Services within a time period of 1 week

24. *Avoiding Traffic Signals  The only time a driver is allowed to drive on public or private property to avoid a traffic light is when directed to do so by a police officer. This violation is a 2 point penalty

25. *Uncontrolled Intersections & Multi-way Stops  When coming to an intersection that does not have signs or signals it is good practice to be ready to stop.  If it is a multi-way stop sign – yield to the person on you right.

26. *Blind Spots  All cars, trucks, and busses have blind spots  In addition a truck or bus may have more and or larger blind spots  Blind spots are also known as No-Zones

27. Emergency Vehicles  As a driver you must pull over as far right as possible and STOP!  Always let them pass you  Do not follow within 300 feet

28. Yielding  Remember as a driver it is your responsibility to yield to the following:  Emergency vehicles  Pedestrians  Other vehicles already in the intersection

30. *Probationary Driver License  Age 17 – Probationary License (minimum 1 year)  No driving between 11:01 pm and 5:00 am  No using cell phones, hand-held video games or any other hand-held electronic devices.  Permit holder must be accompanied in the front seat by an adult.  Must display decals on license plates  Passenger Restrictions – dependents & one additional unless accompanied by parent / guardian

31. *Seatbelts  Keep you from being thrown from the car  Keep you from hitting the windshield or dashboard  Keep you from sliding off the seat and losing control of the car  REMEMBER BY LAW THE DRIVER AND ALL PASSENGERS MUST WEAR THEIR SEATBELT!!!!

32. *New Jersey Vehicle Insurance  MANDATORY – Liability coverage  OPTIONAL – Fire damage, theft, and collision coverage

33. Expressway Driving  Left lane technically is for passing only  Right lane technically is for entering and exiting  If you miss your exit simply go on to the next exit to get off  To avoid highway hypnosis try not to look at any one thing for more than a few seconds

34. *Driving with your Student Permit  You must have an adult driver in the front seat  You must have your student permit with you  You must have your registration and insurance ID card with you at all times  You must display decals on license plates

41. *Drugs and Driving  Drugs may affect basic driving skills  The driver’s senses and judgment will become impaired  Make sure you always read the bottle for these side effects before driving  Do not drive after taking: Cold pills, tranquilizers and some prescription drugs. 42. Drinking and Driving  Be aware that if a person gets drunk in your home and gets into a motor vehicle accident after leaving your home you may become involved in a lawsuit.

43. *Drifting  While driving, if you drift onto a dirt shoulder make sure you do the following:  Slow down and slightly turn the steering wheel towards the roadway.

44. *Brake Failure  If your breaks suddenly give out the first thing you must do is shift to a lower gear and pump the breaks several times.

45. *High Beams  High beams should only be used while driving in rural areas and when there is no traffic in sight.

46. *Approaching Curves  Realize that your vehicle may tend to keep going straight when approaching a curve on the roadway.

47. *GDL Program – Supervising Driver  The following criteria must be met by the supervising driver.  1) Must 21 years old and seated in the front seat.  2) Must be a NJ licensed driver  3) Must be licensed for a minimum of 3 years.

48. *Pedestrians  Failure to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk will result in the following penalty:  $500, up to 25 days in jail, 6 months suspension, 2pts, and community service

49. *School Busses  You may pass a school bus in either direction at 10 mph provided the red lights and stop sign are not flashing and they are on the right side of the roadway dropping students off to the school.

50. *Skidding  If you vehicle goes into a skid you should do the following:  Take your foot off of the gas pedal and turn your wheels into the direction of the skid

51. *Hydroplaning  Driving at a speed of 35 mph or more on wet road surfaces can cause the tires to hydroplane and the motorist to lose control of the vehicle.  To avoid hydroplaning slow down and drive on the highest point of the road.

52. *Suspended Driving Privileges  Reasons for postponement or suspension of driving privileges to any unlicensed person between 13 – 21 years old include:  DUI  Graffiti  Setting false alarms

53. *GDL Program Violations  A $100 fine and or possible suspension of driving privileges will result in any violations of the GDL program

54. *Driving with a Suspended License  If you are involved in a motor vehicle accident that causes injury, you are subject to a fine, continued suspension, and potential jail sentence

55. *Hand Signals  Arm bent down = Stop  Arm straight out = Left Turn  Arm bent up at 90 degree angle = Right Turn

56. *Double Fines  Motorists are subject to double fines committed on a:  Safe Corridor  Construction / Work Zone

57. *Road Test Vehicle  The vehicle used for the road test may not have any obstructions or consoles between the driver and the examiner.  Why?

59. *NJ Right on Red  Unless otherwise posted you can make a right on red in NJ. Make sure you come to a full stop and check traffic before you do so.

60. *GDL Decal Procedure  1 reflective decal on the front AND rear license plate

61. *Altering a License  This may result in the following punishment:  Suspension, fine and up to 6 months in prison

62. *Highway Entering & Exiting  Acceleration Lane – an extra lane at a highway entrance  Deceleration Lane – an extra lane at a highway exit.

63. *Tire Blowout  If you have a tire blowout you must slow down gradually and remove your foot from the gas pedal. DO NOT PANIC!!!

64. *Deep Puddle  Immediately after driving through a large body of water – TEST YOUR BRAKES!

65. *Child Safety Seats  Child safety seats should be placed in the rear seat when possible.

66. *Parallel Parking  Parallel parking is the most common type of parking performed on city streets and that takes the most practice for new driver’s to master.

67. *Breath Test Refusal  Refusing a breath test in NJ will induce a fine of $1000 per year for 3 years  BAC of.10%.  Possible blood test.

68. *Basic Driver License  You may obtain a basic driver license at age 18, with completion of all probationary requirements, and without any suspension or postponements.

69. *Illegal Driver’s License Application  Applying for a driver’s license illegally will result in the following consequences:  License suspension, a fine of $200 to $500, and/or imprisonment.

70. *Special Learner Permit Restrictions Under 21  The following passenger restrictions apply for a special learner permit under 21 years of age -  Dependents, parents or guardians and 1 more person.

72. *Gas Pedal Sticking  If your gas pedal sticks:  Keep your eyes on the road, shift to neutral, and steer the vehicle off of the roadway

73. *Driving in Reverse  The procedure is done as follows:  Your head and body should be turned to the right until you can see clearly out of the back window without the use of your mirrors.

74. *Rain, Snow or Ice  During daylight hours when it is raining, snowing or icy out, a motorist must put on their wipers and headlights.

75. *3 Second Plus Rule  Using this rule helps you maintain a safe following distance/space cushion while driving.

76. *Alcohol & Driving Alcohol will increase the risk of having an automobile accident:  BAC of.05% = Double  BAC of.10% = 6X  BAC of.15% = 25X

77. *Trucks and Stopping Distance  Trucks, due to the size and weight of these vehicles, will take on average 25% more time to stop in adverse conditions.
