ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS How long have the symptoms been going on? Has she ever been diagnosed with any type of Respitory Disease? Does she have any known allergies to foods, medications, dust, or animals? Is she currently taking any medication? Has she been sick with a cold or flu? Are there any animals in the home? Has she been exposed to any toxins such as bug spray, smoke, or paint fumes? Did she perform any type of strenuous activity? Are her immunizations up to date?

DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS Acute Asthma Episode Severe Allergic Reaction (Anaphylaxis) Pneumonia Pertussis Bronchitis

LAB TESTS TO BE ORDERED Peak Flow Meter This measures the amount of air a person can blow out of their lungs

TESTS Pulse Oximtry This determines the patient’s oxygen saturation levels

TESTS Chest X-Ray To evaluate if the lungs are clear

TESTS CBC Complete Blood Count

TESTS ABG Asses disturbances of acid-based imbalances caused by a respitory disorder

Pertussis Cold Symptoms Severe Cough for 1-2 months Possible vomiting after a coughing spell

Bronchitis Rapid Breathing Rapid Heartbeat Drawing in of the neck – (Retractions) Flaring of the Nostrils Irritability

Pneumonia Fever of 102 + Chills Cough Rapid Breathing Wheezing Chest Pain Abdominal Pain Loss of Appetite Extreme cases bluish or gray color to lips and nails

Severe Allergic Reaction Difficulty in Breathing Shock Generally a reaction must involve at least 2 different body systems such as Integumentry and Cardiovascular.
